September is National Preparedness Month, and in anticipation of the observance the national Ready Campaign encourages everyone to get involved and get ready.

The Citizen Corps Councils, CERT programs and other volunteer programs throughout the country will organize events and training sessions to improve people’s ability to help themselves and others during an emergency.

To be prepared for an emergency of any type is not just for those living in “Tornado Alley” or in the area of the country where earthquakes happen, everyone, living everywhere needs to be prepared, “just in case.” Knowing what to do before, during and after an emergency is a critical part of being prepared and may make all the difference in the world when seconds count.

Whether it be an accidental emergency, a natural disaster, weather related or threat of terrorism, citizens need to make themselves knowledgeable of the appropriate ways to respond and react.

Before a disaster occurs, learn how you will know there is an impending hazardous event, know the local advance alerts and warnings, how you will receive them and what media outlets are dependable sources of information.

Being informed in different situations will help to reduce the impact of any disaster and may save lives and prevent injuries.
