On a farm, not too far removed from where most of us reside, there is a population 185 strong – and growing. Most of them have been abused and neglected. Some were born on the farm; and many will die there. Several more were abandoned at the gate without remorse.

Now, these “unique” Tyler County residents dwell together on 174 acre parcel of donated land and depend on a staff of eight to care for their every need.

Who are they?

. . .they are the animals of The Olive Branch Animal Rescue and Refuge, and they need our help!

A non-profit organization, OBARR depends on donations to offset the cost of overall care for the 65 dogs, 101 cats, nine horses, eight pigs and two goats who live on the farm. This includes vet bills, neuter/spaying, medications, and food.

Although money is given to the organization through their benefactor’s estate and by the Tyler County Commission, additional funds are required to meet the $20,000 needed to operate the farm on a monthly basis. This is where the community-at-large can help.

Here’s something to think about:

According to statistics from July 2009, there are 8,680 residents living in Tyler County. If each resident donated a mere $1 per month to care for the animals at OBARR, think of the good that could be accomplished for our four-legged friends.

An author once said, “The basis of all animal rights should be the Golden Rule:we should treat them as we would wish them to treat us, were any other species in our dominant position.”

Examine your conscience and challenge yourself to give.
