We’ve informed the public of numerous scams from those involving the lottery to those involving jury duty and email offers that are simply too good to be true. But recently, scammers took things to another level.

Voice phishing or vishing for short, is the latest in reported scams.

Authorities, credit unions and banks are warning people to be extra cautious when taking phone call from numbers they do not recognize. The most recent scam sends a call from an “automated” voice service claiming there is an issue with your debit card. The customer is then prompted to provide personal information over the phone, including their account number, PIN number and authorization code.

Typically, the scammers use a fake telephone number to make the scam appear more believable.

Remember, never provide your social security number, your credit card number or any other personal information to any person calling on a telephone solicitation. If they do call you, ask for their information – or request a telephone number you can use to call them back directly. This should not be a problem if the call is legitimate.
