It’s been almost two years since the two blocks of Wells Street in downtown Sistersville were changed from two-way to one-way traffic.

The giant windows in the reception area of our office building at the corner of Wells and Charles streets have afforded us many opportunities to watch the motorists go by who are still not adjusting well to the change.

We can’t tell you how many automobiles have rounded the corner and proceeded the wrong way down this one-way stretch of blacktop. Some drivers have actually realized their mistakes, paused for a moment and continued on in the wrong direction.

Obviously a change of this magnitude will require several years to get used to. After all, Wells Street was open to two-way traffic for as long as anyone could remember, so it’s only natural that there will be some confusion. That is why it is extremely important that Sistersville residents and those who frequently visit the downtown area to shop or run errands keep the matter in the forefront of their minds as they drive. They, and all drivers, should pay attention to traffic signs and signals and maintain a lawful speed.

Though the mistake can be entertaining to our office staff the matter could cause an accident if motorists meet in the middle.

Even still, motorists who do go the right direction seem to stop in front of our office at an imaginary stop sign, causing confusion to other drivers who clearly do not have the right-of-way.

Regardless of which direction you are travelling on Wells or whether you choose to obey the traffic signs, be sure to wave as you go by.
