Local students complete health careers education program

By Staff | May 4, 2022

High school juniors and seniors from the counties of Gilmer, Lewis, Marshall, Randolph, Tyler, and Upshur completed a virtual program sponsored by the Northern WV Rural Health Education Center containing thirteen lessons designed to promote a variety of health careers. Students were selected to participate based on their grades and interest in a health career. The students completed a series of assignments in a virtual platform to learn more about the education and training needed for various health careers such as pharmacy, medicine, dentistry, radiology, physical therapy, and more. The students also completed lessons to gain knowledge about rural health, public health, and primary care as well as information on scholarships and financial resources, resume development, and making a postsecondary education plan. Minnie Hamilton Health System was a partner in the project and provided video demonstrations of select departments for the students. Many of the lessons included virtual presentations from health professionals working in the field. Upon successful completion of the program, students received a stipend. The following students successfully completed the program:

Gilmer County: McKinzie White; Lewis County: Evelyn Shingleton and Brooklyn Stout; Marshall County: Aaliyah Otto, Aubreigh Walker, and Amber Yoho; Randolph County: Ashten Arbogast, Britney Bond, Trevor Mallow, and Kelsey Marple; Tyler County: Carlee Dye and Grace Howell; and Upshur County: Abigail Parsons.
