Tyler County Board of Education met Monday to determine which actions were best for ongoing improvements to Tyler County Schools and services.

Under Superintendent Robin Daquilante’s report, she brought up the need for sealing each Tyler Consolidated parking lot.

“Even if it’s on a weekend after school starts, we can still do it,” said Daquilante.

“The only problem is timing,” said Board Member Jimmy Wyatt.

“If you seal, you’re going to cover over your lines. If you cover over your lines when you’ve got football going on, parking is a problem. I would suggest waiting until football season is over.”

As of now, no date has been determined for the sealing of parking lots.

Superintendent Daquilante also revealed that the state is still planning to repair a patch in a Tyler Consolidated roadway. The patch was removed by a snow plow during the last winter season. Recent rainfall has prevented the road crews from repairing it.

The board held a brief discussion on the possibility of replacing the sign in front of Tyler Consolidated. Jeff Davis, the chief financial officer of Tyler County schools, is continuing to research possibilities.

Regarding the Tyler Consolidated Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) project, which involves adding air conditioning to both gymnasiums and replacing any damaged insulation throughout the school, the board is seeking more funding from the School Building Authority.

The HVAC project is meant to decrease the humidity on the building’s second floor.

“In the midst of the project, it was discovered that throughout the building there are gaps between the beams and the roof,” said Daquilante.

“It was constructed that way. It’s not anything that has happened over time. That’s how it was.”

The additional funding they are asking for would be used to bridge the gaps between the beams and the roof.

Renovations with the auditorium continue; with painting finished, new carpet is being installed.

Approved under employments or transfers: the employment of Vanessa Matthews as a countywide substitute teacher; the employment of Stephanie Higgins as a Special Education Classroom Aide III at A.I. Boreman Elementary School; the employment of Amanda Spencer as bus operator for Bus #14; and the transfer of Trudy Pethtel as a Cook III and Cafeteria Manager at Tyler Consolidated schools.

Personnel Director Duane Dober presented the board with a list of four recommendations for the employment of substitute secretaries: Alexis Billings, Cheryl Ferrell, Amy Fluharty, and Jodi White. The board approved to hire each person on the list. Dober also informed the board that they are still looking into prospects for a Biology teacher.

In other employment news, the board accepted the resignation of summer painter Joe Snyder.

Two athletic schedules were approved for the upcoming school year: TCMS 2013-14 Girls Basketball and TCHS and TCMS 2013 Cross Country.

Pending approval from the Wetzel County Board of Education, the board accepted three requests for students to attend or continue attending Wetzel County Schools. They also granted bus use to Sheila Forester and Dustin Turner, directors for the Christian Teen Camp of Tyler County, for the transporting of children from the 4-H Camp to the Sistersville City Pool on July 15. They also permitted Melinda Walton to destroy special education records which no longer need to be maintained.

Daquilante suggested that, during the next meeting, they set an appropriate time for teachers to be trained for a new online grade book. According to her, doing away with the old online grade book in favor of a free one will save the school board about $9,000 a year.

The board approved the minutes of their June 24 special meeting and July 1 regular meeting and voted to pay the bills. All board members were present and all votes were unanimous.

The next regular meeting is planned for July 29 at 7:30 p.m. at the Tyler County Board of Education Office located at TCHS.
