Hoover resigns as TC Superintendent
In a meeting on Jan. 5, Superintendent of Tyler County Schools Jeff Hoover informed the board members of his resignation.
“The reason I decided to retire is that my motivation and drive for the work has shifted to personal endeavors. Although, I still love my work and the people I work with, I have grown weary of the stress of administrative responsibilities. It is simply time,” said Hoover.
Hoover has over thirty years of experience as an educator and as principal and serving Tyler County as superintendent. He worked nine years as a Social Studies teacher at Harrison School. He served as Principal at Ellsworth Middle School for four years, two years at TCHS and 11 and a half years at A.I.B. Elementary and held the position of Superintendent for the past four and a half years.
“My life has been greatly enriched by the opportunity to work with such a high caliber of students, parents, teachers, service staff, administrators, and Board of Education members in both Harrison and Tyler Counties. Harrison County was the home of my professional youth as a teacher; Tyler County was the home of the majority of my career which was filled with administrative challenges and opportunities,” commented Hoover.
An application was posted state-wide for the opening position and the members plan to review the applications at the regular scheduled meeting on Feb. 8. The members plan to hire a new superintendent mid-March.
“I couldn’t have asked for a more blessed personal and professional life. Tyler County is a place that I’m proud to have lived, and worked; and I thank the Board of Education, school system employees, and citizens of Tyler County for a varied professional opportunities, as well as their trust and kindness,” stated Hoover.
Hoover asked the board members to accept his resignation effective June 30, 2010. His plans include doing some traveling.
Duane Dober, Director or Personnel, provided a list of recommended Reductions-in-Force and Transfers for the 2010-2011 school year at the Board of Education meeting that was held Jan. 19. The figures from the Office of School Finance at the West Virginia Department of Education show that Tyler County Schools are currently funding 8.43 professional and 14.5 service personnel positions in excess of the school aide formula. This situation compels Tyler County to make recommendations. Administrators and the Board of Education must act responsibly to provide the best educational program possible despite dramatic budget reductions to minimize the use of locally-generated funds to support these programs.
The following list of teachers and aides that are placed on the list are due to the reduction or elimination of that position for lack of need in force of the least senior teachers. Rob Jones, III, a LD/BD/MI, with two years of experience, at Tyler Consolidated High School. Lisa Feldmeier, a supplemental Math position, with 1.735 years of experience. Shawna Hamilton, a kindergarten Teacher at A.I.B Elementary School, with 3.645 years experience, to be placed on the preferred recall list, Erica Shirer, a preschool special needs teacher at Sistersville Elementary School, with two years experience to be placed on the recall list. One transfer by consent to accommodate a schedule adjustment of more than two periods for Judy Hamrick was previously approved to better meet the needs of students at both elementary schools; however, scheduling realities require the terms of that agreement be altered.
Under service personnel, Debbie Kelley, an instructional aide at A.I.B, to be placed on the preferred recall list. Cindy Fulks, a full-time Instructional aide at Sistersville Elementary School to be placed on the preferred list. Clara Stevens, a special needs bus operator, to be placed on the transfer list for schedule and route adjustments.
The sub-total cost reductions for professional positions is $179,837.19 and the sub-total cost reductions for service personnel positions is $45,707.62 with a total cost of $225,544.81.
Also attending the meeting were two seniors from Tyler Consolidated High School attended the meeting to present the members with some updates. Student Council President, Andrew VanCamp and Vice President, Haley Acree reported on the T-Shirt sale project held by the group. VanCamp stated that they received 30 to 40 submissions for the logo on the back of the shirt with senior, Spencer Kinnard winning the competition. “TCHS Black Hole Welcome Back” was printed on the shirts.
He also reported that on the last day of school before the Christmas break, the students watched a movie and the Student Council collected $311 to donate to the Taylor family that resides in Middlebourne.
On March 1, the Miss Knight Pagent will take place on the main stage in the school auditorium and in April, they plan to have a Bazaar during Saturday Recess. The profits will go towards the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
Hoover discussed the lease with the Town of Middlebourne for the placement of a modular town hall structure on the Board of Education property that is located on Dodd Street where the old Board of Education building once stood. He stated that he will be meeting with Mayor Gayla Fisher to discuss the situation.
Under the Superintendent’s report, the notification of the 2009-10 school calendar adjustments due to flu and snow cancellation days was discussed. April 8 and 9 and June 4 and 7 dates will be converted to full instructional days.
The Board of Education will meet again on Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. for their regular meeting.
