Rod Fagert Named VFW Chaplin of the Year
The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) recently honored one of Tyler County’s most respected and dedicated members, Rod Fagert, naming him VFW Chaplain of the Year. The award was presented by West Virginia State Chaplain of the VFW, Maria Saunders, during a special ceremony recognizing Fagert’s decades of service to veterans and his community. Also, on hand was Andrew Socket, Southern Conference Chaplin and Department Quartermaster for the State of West Virginia.
Fagert, who serves as chaplain for VFW Post 6327 in Sistersville, has been a steadfast presence for area veterans and their families for many years. Known for his compassion and commitment, he has performed chaplain honors at more than 1,000 funerals, has officiated countless baptisms, weddings, and private services, and led flag-raising ceremonies at local events and Paden City High School football games for over three decades.
Born and raised in Paden City, Fagert graduated from Magnolia High School in 1951. Shortly after, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving two years and completing a tour in Korea, where he earned both the Korean Service Medal and Occupation Medal. Following his military service, he attended the University of Notre Dame for three years under the G.I. Bill, later completing his degree in business at Marietta College in 1971.
Fagert’s lifelong faith has also been a cornerstone of his service. He was ordained a deacon in the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston, serving faithfully at Our Lady of Dolorosa Catholic Church for many years. His ministry extended into the community as well. He was a member of the Paden City Ministry Association for about a decade, providing spiritual guidance and support across denominations.
In addition to his ministry, Fagert dedicated roughly 25 years as a referee at Paden City High School football games, where he was known for his fairness and community service. He has also been an active member of both the VFW and American Legion for more than 30 years, serving on the Post Honor Guard and taking part in countless veteran ceremonies and memorial events.
State Chaplain Maria Saunders praised Fagert’s “unwavering devotion to his fellow veterans, his church, and his hometown,” noting that his “service embodies the true spirit of faith, patriotism, and community that the VFW stands for.”
As Chaplain of the Year, Rod Fagert’s legacy serves as a powerful example of a life devoted to duty, to both God and to country.
