Friendly Swears in New Mayor

By Staff | Jul 8, 2026

The Town of Friendly held a special council meeting on July 1, 2026, to mark the transition of leadership as outgoing Mayor Steve Thomas officially passed the gavel to newly elected Mayor Ethan Drain.

Before the swearing-in ceremony, Thomas reflected on the accomplishments achieved during his five years as mayor.

He highlighted several infrastructure improvements, including the installation of new storm drains on Locust Street, the replacement of a manhole and drainage system that had repeatedly overflowed during heavy rains and flooded nearby yards, and drainage repairs on Hill Street and near the Friendly Post Office.

Thomas also pointed to the demolition of three dilapidated structures and the development of the Veterans Park Gazebo and Memorial Complex as major improvements completed during his administration.

In his remarks, Thomas thanked the Tyler County Commission for its financial support, members of the Friendly Town Council, the Sistersville Volunteer Fire Department, and the many volunteers who have helped make the annual Shiloh Days celebration a success.

Following Thomas’ remarks, he administered the oath of office to Mayor Ethan Drain.

Drain then addressed those in attendance, outlining his vision for the future of Friendly. He pledged to continue making improvements throughout the community to attract more visitors and enhance the quality of life for residents. Among his long-term goals is the development of a community splash pad, a project he hopes to bring to fruition over the next several years.

Mayor Drain also administered the oath of office to newly elected council member, Caitlyn Connor. Drain begins his term alongside council members Cyndi Johnson, Caitlyn Connor, Glenni Snodgrass Fluharty and Bonnie Hostuttler. One seat on the council remains vacant, and the new mayor said he hopes to fill the position as soon as possible.

The next regular meeting of the Friendly Town Council is scheduled for July 20 at the Friendly Community Building.
