Tyler County Ham And Bacon Sale a Success
The 70th Annual Tyler County Ham and Bacon Sale took place on February 7. The auditorium of Tyler Consolidated was filled with hustle and bustle as students dressed in blue and gold auctioned off products they had worked so hard to produce.
Katelyn Greathouse exhibited the Grand Champion Ham, which was purchased by McDonalds for $65.00 a pound. Emma Paden auctioned off her Reserve Champion Ham. Ridge 2 River Realty was the lucky buyer of her piece, with the winning bid being $60.00 a pound.
Jonus Glover exhibited both the Grand and Reserve Champion Bacons. McKinley Architecture and Engineering purchased the Grand Champion Bacon for $150.00 a pound, followed by Lance Hickman, Candidate for Tyler County Commission, purchasing the Reserve Champion Bacon for $130.00 a pound.
Abbi Kimble held the title of Grand Champion Eggs, and sold the dozen for $1,000.00 to Long Reach Federal Credit Union. Lunden Wagner exhibited the Reserve Champion Eggs, which were bought by Linda Hoover from the Board of Education.
Many students also spent many hours making loaves of bread to be judged. The top ten loaves of bread were auctioned at the sale. Aaliyah Pittman was awarded the Grand Champion Bread, which was bought by MPLX for $700.00 for the loaf. Coming in second was Breauna Anderson with the Reserve Champion Bread. Delegate David Kelly purchased this loaf for $700.00.
The Tyler FFA Scholarship Ham and Bacon were the next to be auctioned. The proceeds from these two items go to the recipients of the Tyler FFA Alumni Scholarship. Alf Riggs purchased the Scholarship Ham for $1,300 dollars. The Scholarship Bacon was purchased by Momentive for $1,200 dollars.
Many pieces were donated back to the Scholarship Fund to be resold at the end of the auction.
The 2020 Ham and Bacon Sale totaled $72,907.89, pulling ahead from the 2019 total of $61,865.80. The Scholarship Fund also grew as the amount of scholarship money raised was $4,915.00.
