Tyler Bands Excel at Strawberry Festival, Named Grand Champions
The Tyler Consolidated bands closed out the year in stellar fashion on May 18 and May 19 at the 77th Annual West Virginia Strawberry Festival in Buckhannon. The first day of the festival included a ratings competition. The TCMS 7th and 8th Grade Band performed “Canticum” (James Curnow), and “Bryce Canyon Overture” (Jerry Williams). An hour later, the TCHS Concert Band took the stage and performed “Ascend” (Samuel R. Hazo), and “Fire Dance” (David Shaffer) for adjudication. Judges serving for this event were: Scott Hanna (Associate Director of Bands, University of Texas), George Edge (retired director of bands at Grove City High School, Ohio) and Barry Houser, (director of Bands, University of Illinois). Both bands received superior ratings from all three judges.
That afternoon, the Knights Jazz Band performed “La Negra Tiene Tumbao” (Victor Lpez), Moondance (Van Morrison, arr. Victor Lpez), and Angel (Wes Montgomery, arr. Les Sabina) for adjudication. Serving as judges for this adjudication were: Dan Miller, Richard Drexler, Jeff Rupert (jazz faculty from the University of Central Florida). Following the performance, the jazz band was given a clinic from the judges.
The next day, the marching band competed in the Strawberry Festival Parade. The TCHS Band had recently been preparing for this event, parading around the school and track several days after school, reviewing marching basics and then honing these skills. The weather was sunny, hot, and humid that day as the Knights Band waited in the sweltering conditions for their turn to step off. The TCHS Band was 76th out of 114 parade entries. Finally, their time to shine came – and shine they did (quite literally: the sequins and mirrors on their uniforms made for an impressive-looking group). Not only did the band capture first place in their class in parade, they were also named grand champions of the parade. For achieving this feat, the band was awarded a prize of $5,000.
Other awards by the band were: First Place Concert Band, Second Place Jazz band, Best Trombone Section, Best Saxophone Section, and Best Rhythm Section (Jazz Band), and they were awarded the Sweepstakes Trophy (given to the band receiving the highest combined scores from concert, jazz, and marching bands). For this award, the band received a remarkable trophy consisting of a hand-blown glass strawberry sitting on top of a hand-carved black walnut base. The trophy, valued at over $1,200, was donated by WV American Art Glass in Weston, and Caplan’s Jewelry Store, also located in Weston. The dedication, discipline, and commitment to excellence for which the Knights Band has long been known was evident in Buckhannon. While the Tyler Consolidated High School Band was the smallest band that day, it was no indication of their diligence. Hard work can really pay off, and it certainly did for these young musicians.
