Bands Give Superior Performances
On April 25th and 26th, the Tyler Consolidated bands participated in the 75th Annual Region I Band Festival sponsored by the West Virginia Bandmasters Association and the Secondary Schools Activities Commission. This event was held at John Marshall High School and featured middle and high school bands from Tyler, Wetzel, Marshall, Ohio, Brooke and Hancock Counties. Each band performed two selections for adjudication. On April 25th, the TCHS band performed “Pulsation” (Richard L. Saucedo) and “Night Cries” (Elliot del Borgo). The following day, the TCMS bands traveled to JMHS for this state event. The 6th grade band performed “The Soaring Spirit (Rob Grice) and “Alpha Squadron” (Greg Hillis) while the 7th and 8th grade band performed “Beyond the Stars” (Ed Huckeby) and Celtic Air and Dance (Michael Sweeney). The TCMS 6th grade band was the only 6th grade band in that region who participated in this event.
Each band was assessed in the areas of tone quality, intonation, interpretation, rhythmic accuracy, technique, and balance. Other factors considered are choice of appropriate literature and stage appearance (posture, dress, discipline, etc.). The bands were then given an overall score which reflected the quality of their performance.
The ratings are as follows: I = superior, II excellent, III good, IV fair, V poor.
All three Tyler Consolidated bands received a rating of “I” or “superior” from each of the three judges. This was the 24th consecutive year (each year of the school’s existence) that the Tyler Consolidated High School band received a superior rating at band festival. Adjudicator’s for the festival were Mrs. Cindy Smith, a retired middle school band director from Wood County; Mr. John Lynch, a retired music educator who previously served as the band director at Martinsburg High School and Sistersville High School; and Mr. Christopher Nichter, assistant director of bands at West Virginia University.
These award-winning bands will perform their spring concerts in the auditorium at Tyler Consolidated next week. The week of performances will begin with the Knights Jazz Band and Percussion Ensemble on Sunday, May 7th at 4:00. The middle school band concert will be held on Tuesday, May 9th at 7:00 while the high school band concert is scheduled for Friday, May 12th, also at 7:00.
