Filing Periods Announced
Though the U.S. Presidential primaries are heating up leading into the Iowa Caucuses, there is another election that Sistersville voters should know about.
The filing period for city council is between Jan. 11 and Jan. 30. Write-in candidates have until Feb. 4 to file. The city’s election is slated for March. 24.
There will be one seat open in Wards 1, 3, and 4. There will be two seats open in Ward 2. The mayor’s seat is also up for election this year.
Councilmembers Richard Long (Ward 1), Phil Konopacky (Ward 3), and Bonnie Hizer (Ward 4) are in the middle of their four year terms and their seats will not be open until 2018.
Ward 2 has two open seats because Mitch Corley is completing his four year term and Bryan Owens was appointed which means that his seat expires at the next election.
The term of office city council is four years if it is a full term. Council members receive $40 per month before taxes. The mayor’s term of office is for two he or she receives $250 per month before taxes. A prospective candidate has to be a qualified voter of the city and ward. All a resident has to do to get on the ballot is to pay a filing fee for whatever position that person seeks.
