BOE Approves Student Expulsion

The Tyler County Board of Education votes to exspell a student at the regular session meeting held on Monday, May 18.

Following approval of the minutes from the May 5 meeting, Board President Bonnie Henthorn, made a motion to enter into executive session regarding Student Control. The motion was seconded by P.J. Wells and the vote was unanimous.

Approximately 25 minutes after entering into executive session, the board returned on a motion by Wells and a second by Henthorn. Under WVa., School Law 6-9-A-4, regarding Student Control #5-11-15 there can be “The disciplining, suspension or expulsion of any public school or public college or university, unless such student requests an open meeting.”

Following the executive session Superintendent Robin Daquilante recommended a 365 day expulsion for the student. On a motion by P. J. Wells and seconded by Jimmy Wyatt, the board voted unanimous to accept the Superintendents recommendation.

No details of the offense were available.

Jeff Davis, Tyler County Schools treasurer, presented the board with items for approval prior to voting on the final budget for the 2015-16 school year. The following items were unanimously approved:

  • Wetzel/Tyler Health Department 2015-16, $7000
  • Public Library Funding, $23,000
  • County Extension Office, $23,500
  • Coaching Contract Increase for Professional Staff, $200
  • Service Staff County Supplement Increase of $20/month
  • Increase in Athletic Coaching Salaries.

The final budget was then approved unanimously.

Trip Requests were approved for the following:

  • Tricia Feldmeier, AIB Principal, for the fourth grade students to travel to the Carneigie Science Center in Pittsburg on June 12, 2015, with buses for transportation.
  • Linda Duncan, Tyler Consolidated Middle School Counselor, to take the eighth grade class to MOVTI on May 27, 2015, with buses for transportation.
  • Dianne Cunningham, AIB Teacher, for the third grade class to go to Middlebourne Courthouse, Library and Park on June 2, 2015, with bus for transportation.
  • Darlene Koerber, to take the eighth grade class to Kennywood Park in Pittsburg, onb June 12, 2015, with buses for transportation.

Other Requests approved by the board were as follows:

  • Jill Householder for her children, Kaitlyn and Madelyn Householder, to be released from Tyler County Schools in order to continue attending Wetzel County Schools for the 2015-16 school year, pending approval from Wetzel County Board of Education.
  • Ashley Blatt, for her son, Brendyn Anthony Blatt, to cross county lines in order to attend Tyler County Schools for the 2015-16 school year, pending approval from Wetzel County Board of Education.
  • Jack and Pam Stillings for their children, Nathan and Madison, to cross county lines inorder to continue attending Tyler County Schools for the 2015-16 school year, pending approval from Pleasants County Board of Education.
  • Elizabeth Al-Janaby for her children, Saleh, Zayd and Adala, to cross county lines in order to continue attending Tyler County Schools for the 2015-16 school year, pending approval from the Wetzel County Board of Education.

The following resignations were approved by the board:

  • Megan Campbell, Assistant girls, soccer Coach, effective immediately’
  • Brenna Haggerty, Head Cross Country Coach, Tyler Consolidated Middle School, effective immediately.

The following employments were unanimously approved by the board:

Melissa Smith, Substitute Teacher, Countywide, effective May 19, 2015, Lori Helmick, Substitute Teacher, Countywide, effective July 1, 2015, Julie Cozad, Substitute Teacher, Countywide, effective May 19, 2015, Brenna Haggerty, Head Cross Country Coach, Tyler Consolidated High School, effective immediately, Katie Klages, Head Girls Basketball Coach, Tyler Consolidated Middle School, effective immediately, Steven Blake, Head Wrestling Coach, Tyler Consolidated Middle School, effective immediately, Robert O. Jones, Head Boys Basketball Coach, Tyler Consolidated High School, effective immediately, Brian Dennis, Bus Operator, Bus Route #15, effective May 19, 2015.

Approved by the board the transfer of Jerrod Zewick from Supplemental Math Teacher at Tyler Consolidated Middle School to Math Teacher at Tyler Consolidated Middle School, effective July 1, 2015.
