Tyler County’s Knights Radio, WRSG 91.5 has announced they will be hosting a radio-a-thon fundraiser to benefit the Sistersville Ferry. The fund raiser will last for 24 hours starting at 6 p.m. on March 13 and lasting until 6 p.m. March 14. Callers who donate will be eligible to win various prizes that have been provided by local businesses. Individual will have the opportunity to share why they are supporting the ferry.
The historical Sistersville Ferry transports passengers across a scenic stretch of the Ohio River from Sistersville to Fly at the apex of the 20-mile “long reach” which is the longest straight stretch of the Ohio River. The ferry has been carrying passengers back and forth since the early 1800’s and has been in continuous operation since then.
The rates at the ferry when it first came to be were 12-and-a-half cents for every one on foot or per horse; 75 cents for every coach, chariot, or wagon, including the driver; 50 cents for anything with four wheels; and six cents for every barrel, spirits, or flour.
The ferry is not just an attraction for tourists, but it also functions to serve locals. Without the use of the ferry, people would have to travel 20 minutes out of their way to St. Marys or 30 minutes to New Martinsville, depending on traffic and road conditions. Ferry passengers have the opportunity to bypass the bridge and instead enjoy the leisurely five-minute commute.
“Working closely with members of the Sistersville Ferry Board, I would like to make the public aware that their long term goals are feasible,” said Alex King, grant writer for the city. “They are making bold and realistic strides to not only keep the ferry in service but to see that it thrives. Please help us make this historic turnaround possible. We’ll keep history alive and show that it doesn’t have to fade away.”
While the newly revamped ferry board is working hard and are making great strides on a long term solution, efforts such as the fundraiser can go a long way toward the recovery of the ferry. To make pledges call 304-758-9007 during the radio-a-thon. Anyone looking to donate a prize for the cause can contact King at 304-771-8835. Other donations can be mailed through the United Stated Postal Service to 200 Diamond St., Sistersville, WV 26175. Make all checks payable to “City of Sistersville Ferry”.
