The Arthur I?Boreman Elementary School Choir, under the direction of Matt Jennings, performed in Wheeling last week.

The choir at Arthur I. Boreman Elementary had a busy week last week as they performed in two concerts. The first, “A Holiday Card to Wheeling” was held on Dec. 7 at Vance Memorial Presbyterian Church. This community holiday concert was a combined performance of choirs from West Liberty University, Wheeling Park High School, Brooke High School, Triadelphia Middle School, and St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church (Wheeling) in addition to A.I. Boreman’s fourth and fifth grade choir.

Two sold-out performances were given at 3 and 7 p.m. that day. Selections performed by AIB were “Nativity Carol” (John Rutter), “The Angel Gabriel” (Basque Carol, arranged by John Raymond Howell), “Duermet, Mi Corazn” (Bolivian Lullaby arranged by Judith Herrington), and “Sing We Now of Christmas” (a French carol, arranged by Mark Patterson).

All of the choirs combined at the beginning of the concerts to sing “Adeste,” an arrangement of “O Come, All Ye Faithful” and “Angels We Have Heard on High” by J. Edmund Hughes. The performances also included a number of carols that were sung by the audience. These were accompanied by the organist from Vance Memorial and brass and string ensembles that were comprised of faculty members from the music department at West Liberty.

The A. I. Boreman choir then hosted their annual Christmas Concert on Dec. 12. This performance, which was a joint concert given by both the third grade and fourth and fifth grade choirs, was held in the auditorium at Tyler Consolidated High/Middle School. These ensembles directed by Matt Jennings and accompanied by Jillann Westbrook performed for a large audience of family members and the community.

The fourth and fifth grade choir opened the concert by singing the four pieces that they performed in Wheeling. The third grade choir then performed the following pieces with piano accompaniment: “Velvet Shoes,” (Randall Thompson), “There Is No Rose,” (Pat Messick), and “Born, Born in Bethlehem,” (Donald Moore).

Both choirs joined to perform the following pieces accompanied by Orff barred instruments as well as other percussion instruments and recorders: “Carol of the Birds,” (French carol arranged by M.H. Solomon), “I Saw Three Ships Come Sailing By” (English carol arranged by Carl Orff), “Venite Adoremus,” (traditional Latin arranged by M.H. Solomon), “Star in the East,” (from the hymnal Southern Harmony, arranged by J. Kriske and R. Delelles), and “Christmas Comin,'” (West Indies carol arranged by M.H. Solomon).

The concert concluded with the following selections for elementary percussion ensemble: “Pairs or Pears?” (performed by the third grade) “Order in the Gallery,” “Christmas is Coming,” “Jack and Jill,” and “Thump, Thump.” These pieces, all arranged by Jim Solomon were performed on conga drums and a variety of other percussion instruments.
