Teachers of the year are recognized

At Monday night’s board meeting Tyler County Superintendent of Schools Robin Daquilante and the Tyler County Board of Education expressed their appreciation to this year’s Tyler County Schools retirees.

The retirees were presented plaques with a certificate of appreciation and lifetime passes to all middle and high school events.

Those employees honored were Clara Glover, 37 years service; Patsy Fletcher, 35 years service; Tony Winch, 35 years service; Rene Hickman, 33 years service; Barbara Maston, 32 years service; Greg Weekley, 29 years service; Joyce Hagerty, 19 years service; and Brenda Starkey, 10 years service. Daquilante and each board member thanked them for what they have done for Tyler County Schools and wished them well in their retirement. They were all told they would be missed.

Teacher of the year awards were also handed out. This year’s honorees are Barbara Maston, Tyler Consolidated High School and overall Tyler County Teacher of the Year; Greg Goodfellow, Tyler Consolidated Middle School; Katrina Thomas, Sistersville Elementary School; and Judi Hamrick, A.I. Boreman Elementary School, who also teaches at SES and TCMS. Each was awarded and thanked for their dedication to Tyler County Schools and it’s students.

The board approved the 2014-2015 school calendar and gave approval of the strategic plan for enhanced physical activity, healthy, and active students.

The financial report was given by Treasurer Jeff Davis. He presented the board with a request for a 15-cent meal price increase. The increase was not for elementary schools. The increase for middle school and high school was approved, with P.J. Wells being the lone board member voting against the increase. Davis also presented the budget revision requests to the board for approval and they passed unanimously.

The board also approved the following trip requests:

J.C. Kimble, TSA Advisor, to take 16 TSA students to the Technology Student Association’s National Conference in Washington, D.C., from June 27 through July 2. Chaperones will be Kimble, Amanda Kimble and Steven Blake. Transportation will be paid by the West Virginia Department of Education.

Ashley Moore, TCMS TSA Advisor, to chaperone four students to the TSA National Conference in Washington, D.C., from June 27 through July 2. Transportation to be paid by the WVDE.

Other requests approved:

Jill Householder’s daughter, Kaitlyn Householder, to be released from Tyler County Schools for the 2014-2015 school year, pending approval from the Wetzel County Board of Education.

Joe Griffith, Tyler Consolidated High School head golf coach, to hold the annual Junior Golf Camp at Sistersville Country Club June 16-18 for students entering grades three through eight.

The board approved the resignation of Janet Cline, TCHS Yearbook Advisor, effective at the end of the 2013-2014 school year.

Employments and transfers were approved as follows:

Mary Ritz from first grade teacher at SES to multi-categorical special education teacher at SES, effective July 1.

Roger Young transfer from bus route #1 to bus route #38, effective July 1.

Roger Smith approved as head volleyball coach, at TCMS, effective immediately.

Jamie Nelson, approved as extended school year multi-categorical teacher, TCMS and TCHS, effective immediately.

Alisha Craven, approved as extended school year aide, TCMS and TCHS, effective immediately.

Ben Thomas, approved as extended school year Autism teacher, AIB, effective immediately.

Luke Reynolds, approved as head cross country coach, TCHS, effective immediately.

Vance Ash, approved as assistant baseball coach, TCHS, effective immediately.

Greg Weekley, approved as substitute bus operator, countywide, effective July 1.

Ralph Haught, approved as bus operator, Mid-Ohio Valley Technical Institute afternoon route, effective July 1, and afternoon activity bus route Monday-Friday, effective July 1.

Carla Wells, approved as Math Field Day coordinator, AIB, effective July 1.

The board also approved the minutes from the May 19, meeting and moved to allow the authorization and payment of bills.

The next regular meeting of the Board of Education will be held on June 16 at the Tyler County Board of Education Office.
