Dylan Reynolds is the first Tyler Consolidated High School student to advance beyond the state Math Field Day.

A student at Tyler Consolidated High School has achieved a first in the school’s history.

Dylan Reynolds, a senior at TCHS, has placed in the top 15 at the State Math Field Day. Because of that he will move on and compete in the 33rd annual American Regions Mathematics League Competition at Penn State University. The competition will be held at Penn State University, State College, Pa., May 30-31.

Superintendent of Schools Robin Daquilante said at Monday evening’s board meeting that as far as anyone can remember, that is a first at Tyler Consolidated.

Reynolds represented Tyler County and Region V at the State Math Field Day held at Bethany College. At the high school level, the top 10 students from each of the eight regions attend to compete as a team and individuals. Reynolds competed with 80 of the best mathematics students in the state of West Virginia. When the results came in, he placed 13th overall.

Daquilante noted that Reynolds’ father is the cross country track coach at Tyler Consolidated. The board members commended the senior on his achievement.

In other matters at the meeting held at Sistersville Elementary School, after an executive session regarding student, the board voted unanimously to follow the recommendation of Superintendent Robin Daquilante for an expulsion of a student for a period of 365 days. The expulsion was in compliance with the School Laws of WV 6-9A-4.

Under the Superintendents report, Daquilante mentioned the middle and high schools are doing Teacher Appreciation next week instead of this week due to WesTest. She said the board is invited to visit on Monday and Friday; they are welcome to join the students and staff for lunch at the school. Also on May 23 at 1:30 p.m. they are having a talent show by the students and then the staff is having a play. She told the board if they are able to attend it would be worth their time.

Under the financial report Tyler County Schools Treasurer Jeff Davis said they had received four bids on the roof of the bus garage. He said the roof is “shot, to say the least.” Of the four contractors who bid on the roof it was Davis’ recommendation that the board go with Mansuetto Roofing from Martins Ferry, Ohio. Their bid was at $52,275 and because it is at the Bus Garage it is 90 percent reimbursable. He said the contract is for the project to be completed by June 30, which will speed the reimbursement up.

Board Member Ken Hunt asked Davis what the extent of the repairs were. Davis replied it was to put a EPDM (rubber roof) overtop of the existing roof. He noted it carries a 20-year warranty. The board voted unanimously to approve the new roof.

Davis presented the board with the budget revision requests and the preliminary budget. The board approved both. The preliminary budget is $18,573,532.00. Davis said there will a hearing on the final budget on May 19, the night of the final budget.

Trip requests were approved for:

Tricia Feldmeier for the fourth grade students to go to the Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh, Pa., on May 23, with buses for transportation.

Krista DeVaughn for third grade class to go to North Bend State Park on May 14, with bus for transportation.

Tricia Feldmeier for second grade students to go to the Stacy Family Farm in Marietta, Ohio, on May 27, with bus for transportation.

Darlene Koerber, for eighth grade students and chaperones to go to Kennywood Park on May 27, with buses for transportation.

Linda Duncan, to take the eighth grade class to tour the Mid-Ohio Valley Technical Institute (MOVTI) on May 16, with bus for transportation.

Leon Ammons, FFA advisor, permission for the Agricultural Education/FFA students to participate in the following: Wetzel County Forestry Contest at Pine Grove Sportsman Club on May 16; and West Virginia State FFA Career Development Events in Morgantown on June 2,3, and 4, with bus for transportation.

Other requests approved were for Cathy Boggs, son Jake Boggs, to continue attending Tyler County Schools for the 2014-2015 school year, pending approval from Wetzel County Board of Education. Kent Yoho, Tyler Consolidated High School Principal, to set the graduation date for May 21, at 7 p.m.

Personnel requests were approved for Lindsay Snider an extension of her leave under the Family and Medical Leave Act through the end of the 2013-2014 school year. Gloria Lowther was also granted a leave of absence.

Resignations were approved for Joyce Hagerty, art instructor, Tyler Consolidated Middle School, at the end of the 2013-2014 school year. Krista Jones, speech language pathologist, AIB Elementary School, effective at the end of the 2013-2014 school year.

Employment or transfers were approved for Grace Glover, National Honor Society Advisor at Tyler Consolidated High School, effective July 1, also Grace Glover, community service coordinator at Tyler Consolidated High School, effective July 1.

The board approved the authorization of payment of bills.

The next regular meeting will be held on May 19, 7:30 p.m., at the Tyler County Board of Education Office. The TCMS and TCHS LSICs will meet with the board at 6:30 p.m.
