B.O.E. approves trip requests

At the April 8 meeting of the Tyler County Board of Education, Superintendent Robin Daquilante announced to board members that West Virginia Superintendent of Schools Dr. James B. Phares will be attending their July 1 meeting. Because of travel time, Dr. Phares requested the possibility of holding the meeting earlier. The board agreed to have their July 1 meeting at 6 p.m.

The following trip requests were approved:

Janet Cline requested permission to take the Future Business Leaders of America to the FBLA State Leadership conference in Charleston on April 8 with bus for transportation.

Joe Semple requested permission to take four AP Studio Art Students to West Liberty University in his personal vehicle on April 19 to participated in the WV Media Arts and Design “MAD” Festival.

Darlene Koerber requested permission to take 19 HI-Y students to Youth in Government in Charleston on April 26-28. In addition, she requests professional leave and permission to attend the 2013 Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance National Convention and Expo in Charlotte, N.C., on April 23-25.

Amanda Kimble, director of support services, requested permission for three students to attend the Golden Horseshoe Ceremony on May 3 in Charleston. Transportation will be provided by parents. Kimble also requested permission for three students to attend the WV Social Studies Fair in Charleston on April 26. Transportation will be provided by the parents. Tracy Summers and Amy Yeater will act as chaperones and judges of the event.

Mary Ritz requested permission to take the Sistersville Elementary School’s first grade class to the SMART Center in Wheeling on May 10 with bus for transportation.

Clara Glover, choir director, requested permission for TCHS Choir to attend the Fairmont State University to attend the Fairmont State University Invitational Choir Ratings Festival on April 12 with bus for transportation.

Cathy Boggs requested permission to take the fourth grade class to the Carnegie Science Institute in Pittsburgh on May 24 with bus for transportation.

Linda Yoho requested permission to take the SES kindergarten class to visit the TCHS Greenhouses, Domino’s Pizza in Paden City and the Paden Farm on Buck Run on May 10 with bus for transportation.

Natasha Robinson, WVU Tyler County Extension Agent, requested approval for 16 4-H members to participate in the beef cattle evaluation and stockman’s contest to be held at Jackson’s Mill in Weston on April 12. Students will ride with the FFA students on the bus already scheduled for this event.

Under personnel, the board approved to employ the following: Warren Stewart as Substitute Teacher countywide, effective July 1; Judy Grace as Substitute Teacher countywide, effective July 1; David Tucker as Assistant Golf Coach at TCHS, effective April 9; Craig Mason as Secondary Math Teacher for TCHS, effective July 1 and pending approval from Monongalia County; Lori Helmick as Biology Teacher for TCHS, effective July 1 and pending release from Wetzel County; David Tucker as Math Field Day Coordinator for TCHS, effective July 1; Jana Thomas as National Honor Society Advisor for TCHS, effective July 1; Jana Thomas as Community Service Coordinator for TCHS, effective July 1; Bob West as Assistant Girl’s Basketball Coach for TCHS, effective April 9; Jeff Watson as Class II Water System Operator, contracted services at A.I. Boreman Elementary School for the 2013-2014 school year, effective July 1;Tara Templeton, R.N. and B.S.N, contracted services for Specialized Health Care Services at TCMS/TCHS, effective April 8 through June 4; and Bob West as Assistant Football Coach for TCHS. However, Board Member Larry Thomas said he was not in favor of hiring Bob West for the football position.

The board approved the following resignations: Frances Crawford as Secretary III, Accountant III and Auditor for the central office, effective July 1; Rebecca Burnside as Cook II, effective immediately; and Murldene Lemasters, Senior Accountant, Payroll, and Employee Services.\

In other business, the board approved the 2013 Tyler Consolidated Middle School Football athletic schedule, approved the minutes of the March 18 meeting, and paid the bills.

The next regular meeting of the Tyler County Board of Education will be on April 16 at the Tyler County Board of Education Office located inside Tyler Consolidated High School at 7:30 p.m. This meeting is held on a Tuesday rather than the usual Monday evening meeting.
