In gratitude of the A.I. Boreman Elementary School teachers providing their time to volunteer during the Derek Straight Basketball Memorial Tournament, the Middlebourne Youth League donated $1,000 toward a rock wall for the students.

The Derek Straight Memorial Tournament, which lasts for two weeks, was started 10 years ago to honor Straight who played basketball for the youth league. Tragically, Straight died after suffering brain injuries from an accident. The tournament helps to fund the majority of the expenses for the youth league.

Teachers spent their time volunteering with such things as refereeing, running the clocks and working the concession stands.

“We felt like it worked out really well. The kids loved seeing their teachers at the games. It was neat because they got to see them in a different environment,” said Teacher Gwen Davies and Middlebourne Youth League President Tracy Smith.

The volunteerism was such a success that the youth league and teachers hope to team up in the future to give back to the community.

The rock wall will be located on the back wall of the gym. The total cost is $3,700. Additional funding will be provided by donations from Antero and parents.
