Eight choir members make All-State
Eight Tyler Consolidated High School Choir students successfully auditioned for the West Virginia All State Chorus on Feb. 12 at Brooke High School.
The All State Chorus is sponsored by the West Virginia Vocal Music Association (which is part of the West Virginia Music Educators Association) and is open to students in grades 10-12 who are members of the choral music program in their respective schools.
The choir students will perform at the Municipal Auditorium in Charleston on March 2.
On Feb. 12 the students had to prepare all of the concert music for the audition process and then performed for a panel of three judges including Dr. Linda Cowan (voice, opera, and vocal pedagogy instructor at West Liberty University), Leslie Reidel (West Virginia All State Chorus Chair from Huntington, WV), and Nicolas Taylor (Choral Director at Brooke High School.)
The guest conductor for the All State Chorus is Cheryl E. West, Adjunct Instructor of Music Education and director of the vocal jazz ensemble at Butler University in Indiana. Mrs. West also serves as a guest clinician at state and national conferences and is acclaimed for her rapport with young singers.
Members of the Tyler Consolidated Choir who will perform with the West Virginia All State Chorus include Soprano 1 – Katie Hoyes,daughter of John and Karen Hoyes; Soprano 2 – Danielle Seckman,daughter of Danny and Tammy Seckman; Alto 1 – Emily Knowlton,daughter of Pat and Lori Knowlton; Emily Wade, daughter of Jamie and Kristy Wade; Tenor 1- Chad Brightwell, son of Charles Brightwell and Camilla Pinkleton; Tenor 2 – Ricky Hooks, son of Ric and Misty Hooks; Bass 1 – Zach Thomas, son of Marsha Spencer; and Bass 2 – Devon Thompson, son of Ronnie and Freda Thompson.
The concert program includes: “Think On Me” arranged by James Quitman Mulholland, “Where Is Love” arranged by Joshua Shank, “Let the River Run” arranged by Craig Hella Johnson, “The Music of Living” by Dan Forrest, “For the Sake of Our Children” by Jeffrey L. Ames, and “Untraveled Worlds” by Paul Halley.
Chad Brightwell was also selected as a finalist for the Tenor solo in “Untraveled Worlds.”
Brightwell will audition on Feb. 28 for guest conductor, Cheryl West.
