Nonprofit thrift shop expands on Wells St.
“People helping people.”
That’s the motto of Our Town Resources & Thrift Store, Sistersville’s very own nonprofit thrift store now located at 623 Wells St.
Founded by Mark and Kay Walker two years ago at 203 Diamond St., their recent move has them boasting theirs as the largest thrift store in the region.
Items found there include antiques, books, CDs, cassette tapes, jewelry, clothes, furniture, toys and other novelties. The money from sales is placed in a fund intended to help the people of the community with some of life’s emergencies or harder times.
“If people are having financial trouble, we help them out,” said Kay.
If they cannot help, she assured that they will try to point them in the right direction. They work closely with the Ministerial Association, Adams House Ministries, DHHR and other charitable agencies.
According to the Walkers, the move came at an opportune time when there is a rising interest in thrift stores. Mark explained that Andy Weekly, owner of Reliable Supply and Murph’s, made them an offer they could not refuse by suggesting they move into the former location of his business.
“Andy knew we had size restraints and that the location would be optimal,” said Mark. “Just in the week that we’ve been in our new location, business has tripled.”
The Walkers also expressed appreciation of Myra and Bob Butcher who, along with the community, were instrumental to their start two years ago, and to local businesses that continue to make contributions.
Mark and Kay hope that the expansion of Our Town Resources will draw people who love good deals to Sistersville. So far, their position on Wells St. has brought them new visitors, including some from out of the area.
“We’re getting people from Tennessee, Ohio and Kentucky,” he said. “We’re pleased to be able to help bring people into this area, which helps other businesses as well.”
People can get involved by volunteering or donating money or items.
“We basically sell anything that can be resold,” said Kay.
Though subject to change, their current hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
