Individuals affected by the June 29 storm can now apply for disaster assistance from FEMA.

Tyler County residents in need of disaster assistance stemming from the June 29 storm can now contact FEMA to make their claims, it was announced this week.

After it was announced last week that Tyler County was one of 20 in the state to received individual assistance from FEMA thanks, in part, to many of them reporting damage sustained in the storm, FEMA representatives said Monday the lines are open for reporting that damage in depth and filing a claim.

According to documents provided by FEMA, individuals who had property damage or loss other than spoiled food are eligible for assistance. Individuals can file a claim at www.disasterassistance.gov or by calling 800-621-3362. An individual will be asked to provide a social security number, private insurance information, address and zip code of the damaged property, daytime telephone number and bank account information for direct deposit.

Tyler County Emergency Management Director Tom Cooper said though some residents may have already called twice to register with FEMA, they must call again to file the claim officially.

“This call is to register for assistance, and that is really important to understand,” he said.

In addition to the assistance, those who purchased medically necessary generators because of the disaster may be eligible for reimbursement. FEMA guidelines stipulate a medically necessary generator would be used to power an oxygen delivery system, motorized wheelchair or other electrical devices.

Those who lost wages because of the disaster are asked to call their local unemployment office or 211 to find out if they are eligible for compensation.

Low-interest loans are also available as part of the disaster assistance process through the Small Business Administration. After registering with FEMA, an individual may be referred to the SBA to apply for such a loan. Disaster legal services are also available free of charge by calling 877-331-4259.

Individuals with questions are asked to contact any of the listed numbers, or can visit the nearest Disaster Recovery Center in South Charleston, which is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
