Principals and administrators Monday reported a smooth start to the 2012-13 school year in Tyler County.

During a meeting of the Tyler County Board of Education, principals from each school updated members of the board on the policy handbooks distributed to students during the first days of school, and took the opportunity to let the board know the first week of school was a welcome return for students and faculty alike.

Tyler County Schools Superintendent Robin Daquilante said she spent a day in each school last week, and her impression was that of learning happening right away.

“The students were in the rooms working hard,” she said. “You would have thought it was January, not August.”

Principals reported very few issues and said typical problems with student dress code and cell phones were addressed on the first day with no issues arising since then. Many also reported the number of students taking part in the district’s free and reduced lunch program is not as high as initially expected, though Daquilante said she expects that to change as the year progresses.

Under personnel matters, the board approved the employment of James David Kimble as a countywide substitute teacher, pending CIB results; Darlene Koerber as mentor teacher at Tyler Consolidated Middle School; Stacey Roberts as an instructional aide III, itinerant at AIB; Pam Clark as cook II, after school supper program; Eric McKeever as head wrestling coach at Tyler Consolidated Middle School; Tonya Wable as autism mentor at AIB, countywide; Megan Campbell as assistant girls’ soccer coach at Tyler Consolidated High School; and Kimberly Huffman as a countywide substitute teacher pending CIB results.

The board also met in executive session Monday to discuss a student matter. The next meeting of the Tyler County Board of Education is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Sept. 4 at the Tyler County Board of Education Office inside Tyler Consolidated High School.
