On Feb. 23, the 2011 National Championship Team for the Land and Homesite Judging visited Charleston, W.Va. for a citation.

Land Judging involves evaluation of the soil for its best agricultural use. Homesite is the evaluating the soil to determine if it would be a good site to build a home The Tyler County team won both contests, outscoring 93 other teams to become the National Champions and the only fourth Chapter to ever win in both categories in the same year.

The team consisted of George Hilvers, Emily Wells, Ashley Cochran, and Ashley Watson.

Individually, Wells placed 9th in both contests out of 347 contestants; Hilvers placed 10th in Homesite out of 347 contestants.

Delegate Wm. Roger Romine (R-Tyler), who met up with the team at the Capital Building, commented, “Tyler County is fortunate to have young people the quality of these individuals, and the leadership of Mr. Leon Ammons, their advisor. Kudos also to the administration, Superintendent (Robin) Daquilante, and the Board of Education for their support of this program.”

He added, “To all the ‘Aggies’ thank you for a job well done.”
