City receives funding
The Paden City Council recently agreed to a resolution accepting a $10,000 Community Participation Grant from the West Virginia Development Office.
The grant, which was sponsored by Senator Jeff Kessler (D-Marshall) and Senator Larry Edgell (D-Wetzel), will be used to make emergency roof repairs to the Paden City Health and Recreation Gymnasium. These funds will be joined with another Community Participation Grant of $6,000 sponsored by Delegate Dave Pethtel (D-Wetzel).
The County Commissions of both Wetzel and Tyler counties have likewise agreed to allocate money toward the roof repairs. In addition, private donations, insurance money and the Paden City Development Authority are providing further funding for the completion of the project.
Once the new roof is installed, other capital projects are planned as grant money and private donations become available. Those plans include replacing the windows in the gymnasium, new bleachers, refinishing the gymnasium floor and improvements to the stage area for theatrical and musical events.
“The Paden City Health and Recreation Building provides a valuable resource to the citizens of Paden City,” Cork Bowen commented.
The primary tenant of the building is Wetzel-Tyler Health Department. Other tenants include the Paden City Boosters, who sponsor Bingo every Saturday night; and The Paden City Grasshopper League, which allows close to 100 kids from Paden City and surrounding area to participate in their basketball league during the winter months.
“The building currently has space available for lease,” Bowen said. “Also, the gym and cafeteria are available for special occasions, including wedding receptions, bridal or baby showers, birthday parties and other community events.”
He noted that anyone interested in renting the space should contact the Paden City Development Authority at 304-337-2796.
