Middle Island Harvest Festival celebrates the beginning of fall

Daily attractions will include sorghum making demonstration, apple butter making, corn meal grinding, an antique engine display, a flea market, arts and crafts, portable saw mill demonstration, chain saw art, big pumpkins and more.

The 27th annual Middle Island Harvest Festival will kick off on Oct. 1 and run through Oct. 3 with plenty of family-friendly activities slated to celebrate the beginning of the fall season.

Held at the fairgrounds in Middlebourne, the three-day festival will feature daily attractions such as a sorghum making demonstration, apple butter making, corn meal grinding, an antique engine display, a flea market, arts and crafts, portable saw mill demonstration, chain saw art, big pumpkins and more.

The annual Harvest Princess contest will be held on Friday evening at 8 p.m. in the log building. Contestants must be between the ages of seven and 10 years of age and must reside in Tyler County. Applications may be filled out the night of the pageant.

Judging will be based on ability to carry on a conversation, answer questions,age appropriate appearance (no pageant dress, no high heel shoes, no makeup, etc.)

The Princess is expected to participate in scheduled events during the Festival and be a good goodwill ambassador representing the Middle Island Harvest Festival at various public events during the year, such as parades, etc.

She can go on stage and be introduced with other visiting royalty during the

Queens Pageant at the Tyler County Fair.

Pumpkin decorating and scarecrow contest entries must be received on Friday between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Judging will take place at 6 p.m.

Day two will start with breakfast at 8 a.m. with a menu consisting of pancakes with sorghum or syrup, sausage and coffee.

A beef roast can be enjoyed at noon

The largest pumpkin contest will take place on Oct. 2, entries will be accepted from 12-4 p.m.

The annual baking contest is slated that day as well. All entries must be received by 9 a.m. Judging will follow at 10 a.m.

On Sunday, breakfast will be served at 8 a.m. with a pork loin and grilled chicken lunch planned for noon in the log building.

The annual muzzleloader shoot will be held at 1 p.m. and is for rifles only. No scopes will be allowed. The horseshoe pitching contest will also be held at 1 p.m.

Apple butter, sorghum and corn meal will be sold on the grounds during the festival.

Other attractions include an antique engine display, flea market, working crafts, traders alley, apple butter making, corn meal grinding, wood splitting and much more.

Admission to the Middle Island Harvet Festival is free.
