WVPA convention held

Reporters, editors and publishers converged on Glade Springs Resort in Daniels, W.Va. over the weekend to attend the annual West Virginia Press Association Convention.

During the three-day event, an awards banquet was held to recognize the achievements of journalists throughout the state.

The Tyler Star News and Wetzel Chronicle received several awards.

The TSN received awards for the following awards in the editorial competition:

– Best Coverage of Legal Issues/Courts, first place, “Police nab fugitive in Tyler,” by Jonay Corley.

– Best News Feature, third place, “Cheyenne’s Climb,” by Jonay Corley.

– Best Single Editorial, first place, “We Are The Emptiness,” by Jonay Corley.

– Best Single Editorial, third place, “Just Say Thank You,” by Jonay Corley.

– Best Sports Column, first place, “On The Light Side,” by Judy Light.

The TSN took the following awards in the advertising category:

– Best Classified Display Ad, second place, Sistersville Center CNAs.

– Best Classified Display Ad, third place, REM Direct Service Professional.

– Best House Ad, first place, Wanted Reporter.

– Best Single Ad – Over 1/2 page, first place, 2009 Track Winners.

– Best Single Ad – Under 1/2 page, second place, Tyler County Rabies Clinic.

– Best Single Ad – Under 1/2 page, third place, The Muddy Creek Church.

– Best Special Section, first place, Sistersvlle Alumni Tab.

– Best Spot Color Ad – Over 1/2 page, Welcome Back Students.

– Best Spot Color Ad – Under 1/2 page, Sistersville General Hospital.

The Wetzel Chronicle won the following awards in the editorial category:

– Best Coverage of Legal Issues/Court, third place, “Biggest Pill Dealer in County Is Sentenced,” by Amy Witschey.

– Best Lifestyle Columnist, third place, “Taking Aim,” by Amy Witschey.

– Best Special Section, first place, “Paden City High School Alumni 2009,” by Amy Witschey.

– Service to the Community, first place, “Fighting Our Area’s Drug Abuse Problem,” by WC Staff.

Under the advertising category, the WC took one accolade for Best Special Section – Sports, first place, Football Preview.

Additionally, the TSN won second place General Excellence in the advertising category.
