The Upper Ohio Conservation District held judging for the annual NACD Poster Contest during its monthly meeting on June 17. This national contest, coordinated locally by conservation districts, encourages students to explore the importance of natural resources and environmental stewardship through art.

This year’s theme, “Home is Where the Habitat Is,” highlights the vital role both natural and managed habitats play in supporting biodiversity and maintaining ecological balance. More than just a slogan, the theme serves as a powerful reminder that every habitat–from forests and wetlands to backyards and city parks–contributes to a healthier planet. These habitats provide more than homes for wildlife; they clean air and water, prevent erosion, regulate climate, and support the ecosystems we all depend on.

The contest was divided into age categories, with one winner selected from the 4th-6th grade group, and three winners recognized in the 2nd-3rd grade group.

In the 2nd-3rd grade category, all three winners are students from Ms. Gum’s class at Arthur I. Boreman Elementary School in Tyler County: 1st Place – Henley Smith; 2nd Place – Josie Leek; 3rd Place – Colt Davis

In the 4th-6th grade division, Justice Kildow, also from Tyler County, took 1st Place honors.

All four students will now advance to the West Virginia Association of Conservation Districts State Poster Contest in July. State-level winners will move on to compete in the National NACD Poster Contest. In addition, the local winners will be formally recognized at the Upper Ohio Conservation District Awards and Recognition Banquet this December.

The Upper Ohio Conservation District congratulates all participants for their creativity and commitment to conservation education.
