Tyler County Board of Education Honors Educators And Retirees

The Tyler County Board of Education convened for its regular meeting on Monday, June 16, 2025, in the high school auditorium. All board members were present, with the exception of Diana Stander, who participated via phone.

After approving the minutes from the June 2 meeting, the board shifted its focus to celebrating outstanding achievements and honoring years of service.

Carla Wells was named Teacher of the Year, recognized for her 23 years of dedicated service to the students and families of Tyler County. Joe Kester was presented with the Service Personnel of the Year award, honoring his 12 years of commitment and excellence in his role within the school system.

The meeting continued with heartfelt recognition of several longtime employees who have announced their retirement. Each was commended for their contributions and years of service:David Smith – 14 years; Wendy Carpenter – 24 years; Judy Thoburn – 19 years; Elizabeth Riggs – 8 years; Connie Stewart – 35 years; Herb Efaw – 16 years and Lisa Hartman – 19 years. The Superintendent and board members expressed their gratitude for the retirees’ dedication and impact on the school community, marking the occasion with applause and warm wishes for their next chapter.

All agenda items were approved by State Superintendent of schools, Michelle Blatt, prior to the meeting.

Under trip requests; Melinda Walton requests permission for the Knights CODE club to go to local businesses exploring employment options in their community. This will take place on June 24, 2025. Shawna Griffin requested permission for the Tyler County Fair Association to use the AIB parking lot on August 2, 2025, for a car show. The organization will be completely responsible for clean-up. Shawna Griffin has agreed to over-see the event.

Also approved were all requests by students to cross county lines to attend Tyler County Schools for the 2025-26 school year, as submitted.

The following resignations were approved; Mariah Ennis resigns from her position as Second-Grade Teacher at Sistersville Elementary School, effective June 30, 2025. Marvin Moore resigns from his position as Substitute Bus Driver, effective immediately. Mitchell Luke Cooper resigns from his position as Special Education Teacher at TCMS, effective immediately.

Employments or Transfers and Rescissions approved; Employ Kendra Lydick as Summer School Social Studies Facilitator/Tutor at TCHS, effective June 23, 2025. Transferred David Riggle from his position as SPED Teacher at TCMS/TCHS to Career Exploration CTE Teacher at TCMS/TCHS, effective the beginning of the 2025-2026 school year. Employ Angela Watts as Summer School ELA Teacher at TCMS, effective June 23, 2025. Employed Megan Campbell as Summer School Math Teacher at TCMS, effective June 23, 2025. Employed Anya Glover as Fourth Grade Teacher at SES, effective the beginning of the 2025-2026 school year. Transfer Shayla Strawderman from her position as Second Grade Teacher at SES to Fourth Grade Teacher at SES, effective the beginning of the 2025-2026 school year. Employed Townsend Midcap as Art Teacher at AIB and SES, effective the beginning of the 2025-2026 school year. Employed Colton Lawrence as Summer School Special Education Teacher at TCHS, effective June 23, 2025.

The Lady Knights Soccer Schedule for the 2025-26 school year was approved and the two-week comment period of the following policies; Tyler County Ploicy GBC – Volunteers – Adults and Tyler County Policy BQ; Public participation in Board Meetings.

Jeff Davis presented the approved committed fund balance, the year end budget revisions, the milk bid, submitted by United Dairy for $149,290.10 for the 2025-26 school year and the monthly financial report for May.

Following the approval to pay the bills the meeting was adjourned at 7:16 PM. The next regular meeting of the Tyler County Board of Education will be held on Monday July 7, 2025 at 7:00 PM in the auditorium of the high school.
