Under clear crisp skies along the Ohio River, residents gathered Monday morning at Veterans Park in Sistersville to observe Memorial Day, the solemn tradition that honors the men and women who gave their lives in service to the United States.

While Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer for many, in Sistersville it holds a much deeper meaning. Like countless small towns across the nation, the community comes together each year to pay tribute to the fallen heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom.

This year’s ceremony was a joint effort by the local chapters of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and the American Legion. VFW Commander Don Pickett opened the ceremony by introducing Dan Henthorn, who sang a beautiful rendition of the national anthem, while the chaplain asked for prayers of protection over the community and across this great country. Other attendees participated in the traditional laying of wreaths by Sandi Mceowen and Judy Yost, President of the Legion Auxiliary, and the display of American flags throughout the park, which had been beautifully prepared thanks to the dedicated work of Sandra Billings.

The keynote speaker for the event was Nicole Stoller, a graduating senior from Tyler Consolidated High School, Class of 2025. In her heartfelt address, Stoller spoke of the enduring sacrifices made by veterans, highlighting their service in harsh conditions, from freezing winters to sweltering deserts. She also highlighted their long separations from loved ones.

“It is a privilege to stand here today and speak to you about our veterans and what they have done for our great country,” Stoller said. “They sacrifice their health and even their lives so that we can stay safe.”Stoller went on to reflect on the values represented by military service. “The brave and dedicated individuals who wear our nation’s uniform have always committed to one cause above all: to protect and defend the freedoms and people of the United States of America.”She concluded with a message of gratitude and responsibility. “Veterans represent the very essence of courage, sacrifice, and resilience. Their commitment to our country, often at great personal cost, inspires me to appreciate the freedom I enjoy every day.”

As the community paused to honor and reaffirm its commitment to remembering the heroes who gave everything for the nation, the service drew to a somber close.

Then Commander Pickett graciously invited all attending to join them in a community picnic hosted at the local VFW.
