By Shelley Hanson - Staff Writer | May 7, 2025

Construction of the new Sistersville General Hospital will kick off with a groundbreaking ceremony slated for 2 p.m. May 28.

The celebration, which will take place near the current hospital building, will include performances by local students starting at 1:30 p.m. and speeches from speakers including U.S. Sen. Jim Justice, R-W.Va.

Owned by the Memorial Health System, the new hospital will include a 4,500 emergency department with inpatient beds. Other services will include rotating specialists in obstetrics and gynecology, cardiology, gastroenterology, podiatry, general surgery, orthopedics and more.

While the ceremony will take place near the current hospital building at 314 S. Well St., Sistersville, parking and shuttle service will be available off site.

People planning to attend are asked to RSVP by visiting https://www.mhsystem.org/event/sistersville-groundbreaking-ceremony.

“Memorial Health System invites the community to witness a defining moment in the future of healthcare for Sistersville, West Virginia,” said Makya Curtis, healthcare communications specialist with Memorial Health System. “A groundbreaking ceremony for the new Sistersville General Hospital will mark the start of a new chapter–one built on progress, commitment, and care.

The new 30,000 square foot facility is anticipated to cost about $35 million to build.

The future hospital is described by MHS as “a promise to the people of Sistersville and surrounding communities of providing world-class healthcare close to home.”

Memorial Health System, a not-for-profit regional health system, is led by a volunteer board of community members. It employs 3,500 people at three hospitals – Sistersville General, Marietta Memorial and Selby General – and at outpatient sites, provider clinics and a virtual urgent care app, “MemorialCareNow.”

Memorial Health System is also part of the Mayo Clinic Care Network and affiliated with Akron’s Children’s Hospital.
