Tyler County Board of Education Holds Regular Meeting

Tyler County Board of Education met in regular session on July 5, 2022. The regular meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. at the Tyler County Board of Education office. Board members present were President Linda Hoover, Vice President Katrina Byers, Curtis Heintzman and Larry Thomas. Superintendent Shane Highly was also present. New member Scott Strobe attended by phone.

The board then moved to elect a new president and vice president. The newly elected officers are Linda Hoover, President and Katrina Byers, Vice President.  The board approved both elected officers.

The board also approved the minutes from the June 21, 2022 regular meeting.

Superintendent Highly reported that the Tyler Consolidated Middle and High School HVAC renovations were on schedule. Currently work crews are replacing couplings and valves. Mr. Highly also informed the board that the auditorium renovations were going well. The room is completely gutted and ready to start the next phase.

Also, discussed was the lease of the property for the radio tower. The Board of Education is in year two of a three-year lease, and the owner of the property is asking for a five-year lease with a 20% increase after five years. The board approved the new lease which will take effect upon the end of the third year of the original lease.

The TCHS golf schedule for 2022­23 was approved by the Board.

Melinda Walton, Special Education Director, requested approval to destroy special education records which no longer need to be maintained.

Shawna Griffin requested permission to use the TCHS Kitchen, Commons area, Restrooms and Parking Lot on July 24, 2022, for a benefit dinner for a TCMS student recently diagnosed with cancer. The organization will be completely responsible for clean-up. Shawna Griffin has agreed to over-see the event, and permission was granted by the board.

Joe Griffith requested permission for the following school employees to be drivers for the Golf Team if the need ever arises for personal vehicles to be used: Coach David Tucker, Coach Joe Griffith, Karissa Buck, Maggie Fisher and Ashley Moore.

The board approved the following resignations.

Kayla Morris resigned as Tech Coordinator at AIB, effective immediately and Mitch Nichols resigns as Head Wrestling Coach at TCMS, effective immediately.

Matthew Wright resigned from the position of Freshman Basketball Coach as he was hired to be the TCHS Assistant Boys Basketball Coach, effective immediately.

Chris Satterfield resigned from his positions as TCMS Assistant Football Coach and Assistant Softball Coach, effective immediately.

Lori Helmick resigned as Substitute Teacher, effective July 1, 2022.

Kenny Lancaster resigned as Substitute Bus Operator, effective July 1, 2022.

Jami Nelson resigned from the positions of TCMS Mentor, TCMS SAT Coordinator and TCMS Principal, effective June 30, 2022.

Pam Adams resigned from the position of Substitute Cook, effective July 1, 2022.

Matthew Peters resigned from the positions of Physical Education Teacher, Assistant Football Coach and Evening Events Coordinator at TCHS, effective immediately.

The board approved the following employments and transfers.

Tammy Satterfield is employed as Assistant Volleyball Coach at TCMS, effective the beginning of the 2022-2023 season.

Uriah Burgess and Gary Ruble are employed as Substitute Custodians, pending CBI results.

Suzanne Nichols is employed as Instructional Classroom Aide at SES, effective the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year.

Cynthia Gump is employed as Instructional Classroom Aide at AIB, effective the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year.

The following transfer was approved.

Brandi Owens as SPED Teacher at TCMS, effective the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year.

Finally, the board authorized the payment of the bills. The board adjourned at 7:22 p.m. The next regular meeting will be held on Monday, July 18, 2022 at 7:00 p.m. at the Tyler County Board of Education Office.
