Tyler County Board of Education Honors Retirees

The Tyler County Board of Education met on June 21, in regular session at the Board office on Dodd Street in Middlebourne. Board President Linda Hoover called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. with Vice President Katrina Byers and Board members Curtis Heintzman and Larry Thomas present. Superintendent of schools Shane Highley was also present. Absent was Dave Roberts.

Others present for the meeting were Jeff Davis, Treasurer, Stacy Roberts, Executive Secretary, Shirley Goodfellow, Greg Goodfellow, Christina Myer and Jerry Meyer.

The Board on a motion by Cutis Heintzman and second by Larry Thomas voted 4-0 to approve the minutes from the June 5, 2022 meeting.

Superintendent Highley recognized four retirees and presented them with a personalized mantel clock. He thanked each of them for their time and dedication to the students of Tyler County and he wished them a long and happy retirement. Recognized were; Shirley Goodfellow, Teacher’s Aide with 18 years of service. Christina Myer, Fifth Grade Teacher with 21 years of service. Barbara Bailey, English Teacher with 23 years of service, and Kent Yoho, Principal with 33 years of service.

The board was presented with the second semester faculty senate agendas and minutes for the 2021-22 school year. Mr. Highley shared the Tyler County Schools homework policy with the board members. They discussed different options to update a newer version of this policy in the near future. Board members shared many questions concerning homework and how it is being implemented in classes.

Mr. Highley reported that summer school is going very well at this time. He also reported that the Teacher trainings are going well and he believes they are very beneficial. He reported that administrators have participated in a training with Bowles Rice. He said they brainstormed solutions to the music department’s scheduling concerns and they believe they have come up with some options that will work for all people involved.

He also reported that the meats department ordered a new slicer that will be very useful to their program. Highley said the progress of the TCMS/HS Auditorium renovations are ahead of schedule and things are going very well.

On a motion by Larry Thomas and a second by Katrina Byers the board voted 4-0 to approve the following textbook adoptions: Instructional materials for pre-school – teaching strategies “The Creative Curriculum System for Preschool 6th Edition.

Mr. Davis Tyler County Schools Treasurer, presented the FY21 Audited Financial Statement. On a motion by Katrina Byers and a second by Curtis Heintzman the board voted 4-0 to approved the Budget Revision Request. The Board also voted 4-0 to approve the Year end budget television request and the committed fund balance. Also unanimously approved was the Milk bids for the 2022-23 school year, and the Bakery bids for the 2022-23 school year.

On a motion by Katrina Byers and a second by Curtis Heintzman, the board voted 4-0 to approve the following policy reviews: I. IM Homebound Instruction. 2. Tyler County Policy: JAG Regulations for the Education of Students with Exceptionalities. 3. Tyler County Policy: JAH Compulsory Hearing, Vision, and Speech Language Testing. 4.Tyler County Policy: JAH Student Automobile Use. Tyler County Policy: JAH Compulsory Hearing, Vision, and Speech Language Testing. 5. Tyler County Policy: JAK Student Random Drug Testing. 6. Tyler County Policy: JG Dropout Prevention.

The following policies were put on a two week comment period: 1. Tyler County Policy: II Grading System-Honor Roll. 2. Tyler County Policy: IT High School Semester Exams.

The board voted 4-0 to approve the following athletic schedules: TCHS Varsity Football 2022-23; TCMS Football 2022-23; TCMS Volleyball 2022-23; and TCHS Boys Soccer 2022-23.

The board approved by a 4-0 vote the following trips: Mr. Jennings to take the TCHS marching band to the Peach Bowl on December 28, 2022 through January 1, 2023. Boosters will have fundraisers to raise funds to make the trip possible. Tony VanCamp and Kristen Vince will be color guard instructors.

Krista DeVaughn, Principal of SES Summer School to go to Bruce Park in Wetzel County, on June 28, 2022. A sack lunch will be provided. Katie Moore Missy Smith, Megan Campbell, Jan McCaskey, LeeAnn Smith, LeAnn Butcher, Cindi Greathouse, Jennifer Morris, Sara Tallman, or Brittany Flesher will attend as chaperones. Bus transportation to be used.

The board also approved the following requests to cross county lines to attend school: Courtney and Timothy Chichick for Lincoln Thomas to atttend Tyler County schools for the 2022-23 school year. Daniel Gonzales for Abbagail Gonzales to continue attending Tyler County schools for the 2022-23 school year. Patty Garuccip for Jonathan Henthorn and Jasmine Henthorn to continue attending Tyler County schools for the 2022-23 school year. Jason and Bernadette Hood for Elijah and Noah Hood to continue attending Tyler County schools for the 2022-23 school year.

By a vote of 4-0 the board approved the resignation of Brenda Nichols from her position as fourth grade teacher at SES, effective June 30, 2022.

The board approved by a 4-0 vote the following employments: Hannah Shreve as TCMS Head cheer coach, effective the beginning of the 2022-23 season. Tiffany King as TCMS assistant cheer coach, effective the beginning of the 2022-23 season pending WVSSAC certification. Aaron Heasley as community-in-schools site coordinator at AIB, effective the beginning of the 2022-23 school year. Scott Wall as TCHS assistant girls basketball coach, effective the beginning of the 2022-23 season. James Yoho, Rebecca THomas, Casey Goudy, and Katie AlJanaby as substitute teachers, effective the beginning of the 2022-23 school year.

On a motion by Katrina Byers and a second by Curtis Heintzman with a 3-0 vote and Larry Thomas abstaining from voting, the board approved the following employment. Matt Wright as TCHS assistant boys basketball coach effective the beginning of the 2022-23 season.

By a 4-0 vote the board approved and authorized the payment of bills. On a motion by Curtis Heintzman and a second by Larry Thomas, the board voted 4-0 to enter into executive session at 7:41. The Board returned at 8:35. The meeting adjourned at 8:36 p.m.

The next regular meeting of the board is scheduled for Tuesday July 5, 2022 at 7 p.m. at the Tyler County Board office located on Dodd Street in Middlebourne.
