Tyler County Board of Education Holds Regular Meeting
The Tyler County Board of Education met in regular session on Monday, May 2nd at 7 p.m. at the board office in Middlebourne. Board members present were President Linda Hoover, Vice President Katrina Byers, Curtis Heintzman, Dave Roberts and Larry Thomas. Superintendent Shane Highley was also in attendance.
The meeting began with the approval of the minutes of the April 19, 2022 continuation and regular meeting and the April 25, 2022 Budget Workshop.
First up on the agenda was Sharon Campbell, from the Wetzel/Tyler Chamber of Commerce. Sharon presented to the Board a new program they would like to implement in the schools called the Young Entrepreneurs. “We are losing our children to other states because of better job opportunities,” explained Ms. Campbell. The new program would assist young people that are interested in being their own boss and starting a small business in the local area. Hopefully the program would encourage students to remain in the area and invest in the community.
Stella Moon, Program Coordinator of STARS, shared with the Board the accomplishments of the Tyler Consolidated STARS program. This program is known for fostering a career pathway that promotes the continuation of profession development in education. Ms. Moon informed the Board that Tyler County sets the precedence for the STARS programs around the state. She presented the Gold Star for 2022 to Pam Stollings, STARS Advisor at TCHS.
Mr. Highley gave the Board information on the Grow Your Own Teachers Program sponsored by WVU-P. He announced that Tyler County Schools will partner with WVU-P to offer a 2 + 2 program and allow local students to get a head start while still in high school and enter the field of education by taking college credit classes. The goal is to have these future teachers return to their local communities and earn a salary. WV is just one of many states struggling to provide enough teachers for public education. This program is designed to help fulfill the void.
Mr. Highley updated the Board on the HVAC and TC auditorium projects. He explained the project is on schedule to begin after December 2022.
Mr. Highley then informed the Board that Senior interviews were conducted last week. He shared how pleased he was with the professionalism exhibited by the students during the interviews.
Lastly, the superintendent shared a schedule of events for the upcoming weeks. As school is winding to a close, they have many events that will be taking place. May 6th was Senior Awards Day, May 12th is graduation, May 12th is also the last day for students and May 20th the last day for teachers.
