New Year’s Day Briefing

By Staff | Jan 1, 2017

Happy New Year Tyler County.

Now that it is January and time to officially open 2017, maybe check out a photo spread about Sistersville in this year’s calendar published by the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) of the West Virginia Division of Culture and History.

The 13-month calendar highlighted 13 of the Mountain State’s historic districts across the state with personal reflections by individuals associated with many of the sites. The public is invited to request a copy of the free calendar while supplies last. For more information, see next week’s Tyler Star News.

Just a reminder. An application for admission to the Union was made to Congress, and on Dec. 31, 1862, an enabling act was approved by President Abraham Lincoln admitting West Virginia into the Union. So today, roughly 154 years ago, the Mountain State could smile easy, inspire songs by John Denver and have the New River Gorge Bridge imprinted on the back of quarters generations later.
