Sunday Morning Briefing 12-18

By Staff | Dec 18, 2016

Gold Medalists -- Intermediate

Good morning Tyler County.

The Shirley Volunteer Fire Department has new gear. Also, A.I. Boreman Elementary kids were honored for their commitment to building character. More on that in a moment.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory through noon today (Sunday) for much of the region.

According to the NWS, temperatures will plummet behind a passing cold front today. The combination of brief freezing rain, re-freezing of moisture on roadways and light snow accumulations could cause hazardous conditions on any untreated roadways.

If traveling this morning, use extra caution.

The creeks are up. Continued rainfall and melting snowpack over parts of northern WV and southwestern PA is causing high water issues, according to the NWS. If you come across any water flowing over roadways, do not attempt to drive through it.

Please watch for rising waters if you live along creek and streams. Some roadways may also have water across them so be on the look out for flooding on the roadways in some areas of the county.

When thinking about the weather and the potential for accidents, the editor’s thoughts turn to the Shirley Volunteer Fire Department. These dedicated and determined first responders now have new sets of Bunker gear (jackets and pants). The total cost of the 8 sets of gear was $15,300. The Tyler County Commission paid for $12,000 of it and they approved that purchase in September, according to Ryan Kinney, a longtime firefighter and SVFD vice president. Kinney said Zoll AED was purchased from funds obtained from the Stealey Green Grant in the amount of $2,000. More on this story will appear in next week’s Tyler Star News.

And now to end on a happy note.
