Sistersville: ‘Rich’ With Spirit

SISTERSVILLE – Caitlyn Dawn Hayes wore a smile and a crown as she made her way around downtown perched up high in a convertible Saturday at the big parade.

Hayes is the Pre-Teen Tyler County Fair Queen and the granddaughter of Becky Hayes, a Sistersville High School alumnus who is active in the community.

Hundreds of people lined the streets downtown for the annual SHS Alumni parade. When Caitlyn Hayes saw some children standing in front of the Tyler Star News office, she threw a bunch of candy to them. One little boy shouted, “We’re rich!”

Indeed the town was rich with school spirit as heroes and villains alike descended in floats and on foot down Wells Street. One class float featured healthy brains behind a barbed wire fence that was surrounded by zombies. Batman, aka SHS alumnus Charles McCoy, kept the city streets safe from crime.

The SHS marching band sounded pretty good as they made their way around the block much like the Rolling Stones or the Eagles playing another “final” tour. Like a fine wine, some things get better with time.

A couple days before Memorial Day activities, local veterans lead the alumni parade Saturday through Sistersville.

Speaking of bands, Tyler Consolidated’s marching band hit the high notes too. The Silver Knights’ superior skills have spawned a legend in them thar’ hills.

Boy Scouts from Middlebourne and veterans marched in stride.

After the parade, many folks made their way to the city pool, which was packed!

Temperatures soared into the upper 80s and it clear sky day, perfect swimming weather. Much thanks to Shannon Anderson of State Farm in Sistersville and Sistersville Planning Commission for providing the pool free of charge during this busy weekend.

Not to be outdone, walk-on riders got a free ride Saturday on the Sistersville Ferry thanks to Sistersville High School Class of ’78.
