CREATE A NEW TOPICIs Sistersville 'ON TRAC'?
I'm very anxious to see whether or not people in the community whole-heartedly support Tyler Revitalization's movement to revive Tyler County and more specifically, Sistersville. I am sure I am not the only one who can remember when Sistersville was the place to be. I think more people should come out to support the movement. The Governor and the First Lady are behind us, so why not. WEhat do YOU think?

Having two different cruises is an excellent idea. Please contact Karen Mercer and offer to help organize one or both of these events. The scheduling of the cruises would be up to the availability of the ship's owner. As to limited liquor sales ??? Folks NEED TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THEMSELVES.(this is opening another "can of worms" / topic). As many of you know, sale of liquor brings the most profit over food sales for resturants, bars, and events such as this. I think, the ship makes additional money from the bar sales over and above his set fee for the rental of the boat and captain's wages. Please help Karen organize these events! Any ideas for themes? When would you like to have these cruises? Month, day, time?

Thank you, Dan! I stand corrected and will call the structure - the County Home! I certainly have a great deal of respect for the folks that lived there and that is why I will continue to work to restore it as a way to honor those residents. Yes, they were self sufficient and worked the farm to provide for themselves rather than just sit back and take a government check. Perhaps we can learn many things from the residents of our County Home.

Why not do two different types of cruises? The Sunday afternoon one could be similar to a gospel concert with food but no alcohol, while the other would be a theme cruise of some sort that has food and alcohol. Limits on the alcohol should apply since this is on the water.

The cash bar and the river cruise is not the issue...it's the gospel music thrown into the mix. Not appropriate.

Dan, good question! I would like to know the answer too! There are a good many grants out there that we could be applying for, yet we never seem to be part of the process. Very seldom, in the newsletters I receive do I see Tyler County mentioned as a recipient of any grant.

snorks sorry but "most people" do like that kinda of party on the weekends New Martinsville has three cruises. One had 183 people, one had 150 and one had 93 on a dinner cruise at $32 per person. The boat had two sections and if you wanted to get away from the bar or music it was very possible. There were no drunks and the children were free to wander on both the paddlewheel or the party barge. Good time had by all except thoes who didn't make it.

Dan, the state just gave out the Small Cities Community Development Block Grants and guess what - there was not one grant to be had for Tyler County. These grants are to be used for improving the quality of life and attracting new business. Guess Manchin did not think we needed this kind of help even though he is a supporter of our revitalization project - or is he? - tylerresident TylerResident, I would like to know exactly what TCDD Eric Peters is getting paid for. He is supposed to be getting grants for all kinds of things in Tyler County. The only things he seems to get are grants for things that nobody really wanted aka the Sistersville Walking Trail. City Council kicked that thing around for 4 years before they finally moved on it.

Try living somewhere else and you will realize how nice it is to live here. I have lived other places and have learned to appreciate good old Tyler County. True, we have our issues and short-comings but overall I haven't found anywhere else I want to be. I would also like to ask you to refer to the property as the County Home - that is what I always heard it called and it is less offensive to those of us who had family that lived there. Thx for all your hard work.

Chris, I wish you would quit refering to the County Home as the "Poor House." The Arzie Merritt family (who was my maternal grandmother's uncle) ran that farm during the depression. It is quite wrong to say the people that lived there were poor. The people who lived there (unlike the residents of Timberridge or any other Section 8 HUD Housing) actually had to work for their keep to live there. I respectfully ask that you please in the future to refer to it as the County Home. That was it's proper name.

INVOLVED: I just don't think that is the kind of party most people would feel comfortable attending on a Sunday afternoon. But I could be wrong. Maybe a floating cash bar with a Jesus Band is what this town is after...

I am not familiar with this particular grant, however giving out grant money has changed in recent times. Most grants want to see a matching amount of money from those requesting money. This can be in the form of volunteer hours ( rate is about $18.00 per volunteer hour) or in kind services, or donations. The organizations want to see that those asking for money have the support and committment in their community for the requested project. So now, money is just not given out just because a group or city ask for it. For example: when we have a "work party" at the Poor House, we are keeping records of who worked and how many hours. Then when we go for a grant, we have documented evidence that renovating the structure is supported by many citizens of Tyler Co. This is one reason it is very important to volunteeer for projects in your town or county. Your time is valuable on many levels.

Beatlebug, to answer your question about how much profit ONTRAC made from the river cruise - not much after the ship's owner was paid, food expenses, a donation to the performers, etc. . . if you had attended our meeting this past Monday, you would have heard the treasurer's report. Meetings are open to the public. The main success of the cruise was it was a new / different event for Sistersville / Tyler Co. and the folks enjoyed it and want to do it again. Also, FYI the Subway is still under negotiations - not a done deal.

Yes, this town in "On Trac". I read today that Pine Grove (pop 500) is getting a HUGE grant to replace it's sewage system. All this town seems to get are grant for a bunch of crap. Walking trails, murals, and ferry boats will not provide one drop of water for this town.

It is more "on trac" than it has been for the last several years. At least some are making an effort. Hats off to those who are trying to make some things happen and dealing with the negativity. It's a shame so many aren't giving more support. I luv it here and wouldn't want to live anywhere else, but it would be nice to have more businesses and places to eat. Also, the murals look great and I enjoy them every time I drive by.

What would you propose we put in Sistersville for kids? The days of arcades are long gone since they have access to that type of technology in their own homes.
