The Tyler County Board of Education met on Monday, June 15 to thank MPLX, discuss re-entry of schools in the Fall, and say goodbye to longtime Board Member PJ Wells.

Following the approval of the previous minutes, Superintendent Shane Highley presented Tina Rush, Craig Landis, and Kurt Long of MPLX with a plaque thanking them for the work they had completed at Tyler Consolidated.

Shane Highley then presented the 2020-2021 Board of Education meeting schedule to be approved. The schedule remains the same as it has in the past, meeting on the first and third Monday of each month. There was, however, an additional meeting added in December so the Board will meet twice during the month.

P.J. Wells has served as a member of the Tyler County Board of Education for eight years.

Highley then updated the Board regarding the plans for heading back to school in the Fall. Highley reported he would be releasing more information later in the week outlining what a day in the life of a Tyler County student would look like upon returning. "I can tell you we did choose the four day model. There were two models the the state provided that we could choose from," said Highley.

Highley reported the students would attend school Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. This would allow the administration one day in the middle of the week to clean and disinfect.

"On school buses, kids are not going to have any other option but to wear a mask. When they get to school, we have no plans of making kids wear a mask all day," Highley said.

Board Member Katrina Byers said she is working with the WV Mask Army and a church group to try to get cloth masks made for each student. However, if a student forgets their mask, there will be disposable masks available on the bus.

Next, Mr. Highley gave an update on the status of the stadium project taking place at Tyler Consolidated. He reported the next step is to lay down the turf on the football field. According to Highley, the press box is supposed to be arriving soon, as well.

As for the Bus Garage project, Highley reported they are ready to pour the foundation work.

Next, the Board approved the milk, beverage, and food bids for the 2020-2021 school year.

Also approved were the following resignations: Pamela Robinson as Head Cook at SES, Abby Cecil as ELA Teacher at TCMS, Abby Cecil as Yearbook Editor at TCMS, and Abby Cecil as Community Service Rep at TCMS.

The following employments were approved: Paden Morris as Evening Events Coordinator at TCMS/TCHS, employ Russell Blatt as Summer Painter, employ Shawna Hamilton as School Day Plus Coordinator at AIB.

P.J. Wells then moved to approve the payment of the bills. The motion carried unanimously.

Member Linda Hoover then honored PJ Wells for his eight years of service. "You're going to be missed. Thank you for all you've done, PJ," said Hoover.

Following this, the meeting was adjourned.
