TCMS Honor Band Performs in Charleston

March 13, 2019
Tyler Star News

The Tyler Consolidated Middle School 7th and 8th Grade Band performed their state honor finalist concert this past Friday, March 8th in the Charleston Civic Center. In early February, the band was named the 2019 West Virginia Middle School State Honor Band.

A large crowd of family members, music educators, Tyler County teachers, and many others gathered in the North Hall of the Civic Center for this concert.

Their performance was held in conjunction with the West Virginia Music Educators Association's In-Service Conference. This 73rd annual conference included a variety of clinics, meetings, performances by middle school and high school state honor groups, and the rehearsal and performances of the all-state ensembles: band, choir, high school orchestra, middle school orchestra, and children's chorus.

Neil Randolph, chairman of the honor ensembles introduced TCMS Band Director Matt Jennings at the beginning of the concert. Former Knights Band Director, Wayne Smith presented Jennings with their Honor Ensemble plaque. Smith recognized Mrs. Becki Wilson for her contributions to the program as the first director of the TCMS Band.

Jennings took time to thank those who played a role in helping the band to become so successful: Brian Bailey, Anna Carpenter, Sally Conklin, Maggie Fisher (private lessons), Wayne Smith, Cindy Smith, Mark Hardman, Rocky Wiseman, and Sheila Wiseman (guest clinicians). He also thanked the Knights Band Patrons, TCMS Principal Jami Nelson and Tyler County Superintendent Robin Daquilante for their support of the organization. Lastly, he expressed his appreciation to the parents and extended family of the band members. He noted that they all obviously come from very good, loving homes which certainly contributes to their success. Jennings stated that he feels very blessed each day to teach such fantastic, hard-working students.

The process to become the state honor band was a long one. Knowing the potential of this group (this is the first TCMS 7th and 8th Grade Band to have started band in 5th grade), Jennings began working on this goal nearly a year ago when former Knights Band Director Wayne Smith assisted in helping to select music for the band. He submitted recordings of three selections in late January and they were considered by a panel of judges, including directors from Penn State, Illinois State, George Southern, Grove City College, and Southern Mississippi. To even be considered, they had to score a 90% or better in their rubric - which they exceeded.

Other state honor groups selected were the Jefferson High School Band, University High School Band, the Wheeling Park High School Jazz Band, the Shepherdstown Middle School Jazz Band, and the Wheeling Park High School Choir. This is the second Tyler Consolidated Band to be named the State Honor Band as the TCHS Wind Ensemble was the 2008 High School State Honor Band.
