Tyler Consolidated's girls basketball team opened up their 2018-19 season on the road Friday, Nov. 30 and made the long trip a short one as they returned to Middlebourne with a 65-22 victory over South Harrison.

The Knights were in control of the game from the beginning and used a stifling defense and some good ball movement to secure the win. Tyler had an off-night shooting the ball, making just 20-71 shots, but made up for it with 76 percent free throw showing, hitting 22-29 from the stripe.

Senior four-year player Josey Jones picked up where she left off last year and connected for 25 points. She hit seven field goals, including a three-pointer, and was 8-13 from the charity stripe. Backing her in the scoring column was senior mate Peyton Kocher with 12 markers, hitting 2-5 from beyond the arc and going 6-6 from the line. The duo led the team while only hitting 10-39 from the floor.

"It wasn't our best shooting night, but defense stepped up big. I was happy with our rebounding.

Any time you can out-rebound a team 28 to 9 you're going to have a great chance to win the game. We limited them to one or two shots each time down the court, which is our goal for every team we play against. I was also happy with our shot selection. I thought overall we had really good looks at the basket, even though we missed several easy shots. I blame that on first-game jitters. We can't miss those shots against teams like Parkersburg Catholic and expect to win," said Coach Ben Thomas.

Senior JoLee Walton added seven points and nine rebounds for the Knights as she connected on 2-10 from the floor and had a 3-4 showing from the line. Summer and Allie Miller each contributed six points and a combined eight rebounds for the Knights. Sophomore Regan Smith hit for four points and grabbed seven rebounds and Caleigh Phillips went 1-2 from the line for a point. Senior guard Miranda Weekley played a good floor game with seven assists and four points on 2-3 shooting, Weekley and Jones combined for 11 steals.

"We can only get better from here. This is a good first win to our season. I was pleased with the play of our seniors. They all contributed tonight and played complimentary ball. They helped each other on defense and worked the ball around on offense,"added Coach Thomas ."What I love about winter sports is winning and having a glass of eggnog. That's how I celebrated this win. I hope to have several cups of eggnog this season."

The Knights will try for win number two tonight in a home contest against Parkersburg Catholic. The will be no JV game prior to the tip-off.
