Wildcats Drop Second Straight

Going into the season it looked like the Wildcats might be a force to be reckoned with. They looked impressive in the pre-season. With size up front and skilled players, including four nice running backs, the Wildcats' fans were hoping for a quick start to a winning season.

On Friday night at Wirt County, the homestanding Tigers declawed the Wildcats to the tune of 38-16. The Tigers got on the board first behind a 39-yard scoring strike from Dylan Lowe to A.J. Garrett; Lowe connected to Nathan Murray for the two point conversion to give the home team an 8-0 lead.

The Wildcats answered right back when senior first-year player Matt Saxon took the kick-off and raced 80 yards to the end zone to make it 8-6. Michael Shreves tacked on the two point run to tie the game, ending the first quarter.

With 7:34 to go in the second period, Wirt added a two-yard run to make it 13-8 and moments later tacked on another with a 35-yard interception return for a 20-8 lead. at intermission.

Wirt got another score at the eight minute mark of the third on a 24-yard run, and the conversion run was good - giving the home team a 28-8 lead, but the Wildcats answered when Saxon caught a 25-yard pass from Alex McCoy for a score.

Jason Anderson tacked on the two point conversion on a pass from McCoy. At the end of three quarters, the score was 28-16.

With 3:49 seconds left in the game, the Tigers struck again on a Garrett Parsons six-yard run.

The kick was good, and the home team came away with the win. Saxon led the Wildcats with two touchdowns and a total of 136 yards.

Shreves accounted for 10 points on a touchdown pass and a couple two point conversions.

The Wildcats' Ryan Cross led the rushing attack with 64 yards on 13 carries, while Michael Shreves added 28 on 10 totes. Clayton Thomas ended with 23 on four carries.

McCoy got 12 on four tries. McCoy attempted 15 passes, completing three for 62 yards and a touchdown but suffered three interceptions. Saxon was 2-4 passing for 43 yards. Saxon was on the receiving end of two passes for 43 yards, while Cross grabbed one for 32 yards. Anthony Newman caught one for 32 yards, and Thomas one for 11 yards.

Wirt led the Wildcats in first downs, 12-9. Paden City suffered 11 penalties for 70 yards. Wirt was penalized six times for 55 yards. The Tigers also lost two fumbles to none for the Wildcats.

Jason Anderson led Paden City with 12 tackles, one sack and a fumble recovery. Cross recorded eight tackles from his linebacker spot.

The Wildcats fell to 0-2 with the loss and will try to pick up their first win of the season when Van High School invades town on Friday, for a 7 p.m. game.
