Sports Spotlight: Emily Lancaster

August 1, 2018
Tyler Star News

Every year there are high school athletes who fit in with the program, make great contributions to the team, and have potential to be game changers. Tyler Consolidated has that type of athlete in senior Emily Lancaster.

Lancaster's desire to be on the court or on the field is evident. She's a competitor who has the ability to propel a team to greater heights just by influence.

Lancaster is a double sports star for the Silver Knights, having competed in volleyball and track since her freshman year. In volleyball, she has developed into a great blocker, and with her leaping ability and timing, she has become one of the best in the area. Her main role on the team is a middle hitter, and she has proven to be very effective with her side and off-direction placement.

EMILY LANCASTER

"Emily Lancaster is a vital part of the volleyball team here at Tyler Consolidated. I would like to have more players like her; she is coachable, confident and willing to learn. She has made some mistakes along the way, but I can say that she always bounces back and gives her best to not repeat them. I have a lot of confidence in her, and she works well with the rest of the team. She is also a good example-setter for the younger kids," said Coach Richard Summers.

Lancaster has a natural ability to get to the ball; her reflexes and instincts allow her to react quickly in difficult situations. Breaking into the starting lineup at Tyler Consolidated is not an easy thing, but Lancaster has worked her way there without a doubt.

Along with sports, academics always play a vital part. Lancaster has consistently been on TCHS' honor roll. She has several interests, including music. She enjoys playing the guitar and ukulele in her spare time, and she also plays percussion in both the Knights Jazz and Concert bands.

Most recently, Lancaster completed the West Virginia State Police Junior Trooper Program at the WVSP academy in Charleston, which could help her decide on one of the future plans she's considering, the military.

As a member of the Silver Knights track team, Lancaster has had success competing in the long jump and sprints but has really found her calling with the pole vault and shuttle hurdles.

At the state meet this past season, she placed sixth in the pole vault, and her shuttle team ended fifth. Lancaster is the school record holder in the pole vault with a 9'6" vault.

Even though she is undecided about her future following high school, from every indication she will make the right choice.

Attending West Liberty is another one of her options where she would like to be a part of the track team.

Lancaster is a winner who is dedicated to her family, friends, school and athletics. Come out and watch her play. Her hustle, desire to play, and overall attitude make her worth the price of admission. Good luck, and keep on working hard Emily!
