To The Editor,

The Blessing that is our curse...

For the last 10 years, I have seen what we want to call progress in our area. The oil and gas development in our area has brought many issues to our rural way of life. From vehicle accidents, to trash all over the sides of the roads, mud and debris, roads completely destroyed, and the lack of accountability, etc.

One of the most upsetting issues is the overall landscape being completely altered for development and a piece of paper that says "In God We Trust." For those that are religious, please reference 1 Timothy 6:10... years ago I was to memorize this scripture, and it has stuck with me.

We have been blessed to have such a resource beneath us. Unfortunately, what I have seen is free gas being a thing of the past, and the resource shipped out of the area, and "Almost Heaven," turned upside down.

Many landowners sign deals without regard to their neighbor, who lives there, and completely upsets their way of life. The owner that makes this deal does not even live in the area. Many family farms are just outright sold with no sense of heritage to the land the family had worked for. I know this is not going away because the almighty dollar is involved.

I am just thankful that my grandparents had enough of a vision to see it coming again after it happened at the turn of the century and what it meant to have land to provide for one's self during the depression. They spoke in their will to not have the family farm leased or timbered for financial gain but that descendants might always have access to these assets to build, soil that provides a garden, water to drink, or somewhere to relax, such as hike or hunt.

I just hope I can honor these wishes and protect the serene landscape that was left to enjoy...

What will you leave behind...
