Tyler Consolidated High School freshmen Savannah Ferrell and Matthew Riddle represented the Knights Band recently in their respective all-state ensembles.

This three-day event, which began March 8, culminated in a series of concerts held at the Charleston Municipal Auditorium on March 10.

The All-State Band and All-State Orchestra is held in conjunction with the West Virginia Music Educators Association's In-Service Conference.

This 72nd annual conference included a variety of clinics, meetings, performances by middle school and high school state honor groups, and the rehearsal and performances of the all-state ensembles: band, choir, high school orchestra, middle school orchestra, and children's chorus.

Membership in the West Virginia All-State Band and Orchestra is earned by a rigorous audition process. Ferrell and Riddle began practicing for their audition in late May, 2017.

Their audition was held at the College of Creative Arts on the campus of West Virginia University in early December. Of the nearly 500 that auditioned, 102 outstanding instrumentalists from around the state were awarded membership in the All-State Band and 25 wind players were selected for the All-State Orchestra (the string players, who audition separately from the winds, comprised the rest of the 105-member orchestra). This is the second year-in-a-row that the Knights Band has had two all-state musicians. Overall, Tyler County was represented by ten students who were members of the all-state band, all-state choir, or all-state children's chorus.

The guest conductor for the All-State Band this year was Dr. Damon Talley, who currently serves as director of bands at Louisiana State University.

The all-state band's repertoire this year included: Marche Hongroise (Hector Berloiz), Lux Arumque (Eric Whitacre), Armenian Dances (Alfred Reed), Undertow (John Mackey), and Simple Gifts (Shaker Tune, Frank Ticheli).

Matthew Troy served as the guest conductor for the All-State Orchestra. Troy is currently the music director of the Piedmont Wind Symphony in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and has previously served as director of the Rochester Philharmonic. Pieces performed by the All-State Orchestra were: L'Arlesienne Suite No. 2 (Georges Bizet), Three Dances from the Bartered Bride (Bedrich Smetana), and Finlandia (Jean Sibelius)

Savannah Ferrell (bass clarinet), is the daughter of Cheryl and Jeff Ferrell of Middlebourne.

Matthew Riddle (tuba) is the son of Stephanie and George Riddle of Sistersville. Their director is Matt Jennings.
