Josey Jones Named First Team All-State

The West Virginia Sports Writers Association announced the 2017 high school Class A all-state volleyball team last week with four players from the local area being named.

Chosen to the first team was Tyler Consolidated junior Josey Jones. The Silver Knights made it’s second straight appearance in the state tournament in Charleston, this year but fell in the quarter-finals to eventual champion Wirt Co.

Getting through the regular season and what maybe the toughest sectional in the state was a big assignment for the Knights but Jones led them to some big wins with her hustle and determination which payed off with her pick as a first team player.

During the season she compiled some impressive stats as she finished with 42 aces, 84 blocks, 365 kills and 403 digs. Over and over again she came up with big plays and proved to be the glue that held the team together. She is one of six juniors on the Knights team who will be back next year for another shot at the title.

Also named to the squad was Alexa Johnson who was chosen as captain of the second unit. Johnson was most recently chosen to the first team All-LKC. She finished with some impressive numbers herself having 447 kills, 99 blocks and 132 points.

Team mate JoLee Walton was awarded a spot on the honorable mentioned list. Walton, finished her year with 49 kills, 58 aces, 42 blocks, 187 digs, 901 assists and 1837 sets.

Paden City landed two on the team with freshman Hope Weber picking up a spot on the second team unit. Weber had a great beginning to her high school career as she amassed 434 kills, eight aces, 237 points and 91 blocks. She was also chosen this year as the OVAC Class A player of the year.

Mallory Yeater another freshman player for the Wildcats, also landed on the honorable mention list. Yeater teamed with Weber to give the Wildcats it’s first team with two freshman starters. Yeater compiled 132 kills, 14 aces, 478 points, 81 digs, 448 assists and 1038 sets.
