Wildcats Drop Thriller 55-50 to Yellow Jackets

Wildcats’ Aaron Heasley is eyeing his mark and about to make his move through these Yellow Jackets’ defenders. Though Williamstown won 55-50, the score doesn’t tell the whole story.

PADEN CITY – Williamstown came to Wildcat town on Dec. 13 with hopes of going away big winners.

The Wildcats had other ideas, however, and and battled the Yellow Jackets down to the wire in a thriller that could have gone either way. It was the second straight game where Paden City looked to be out manned, but the never say quit Wildcats battled to tie the game late at 50 before the visitors found a way to pull it off in the end.

Leading state ranked Williamstown 12-8 at the end of the first quarter the Wildcats went cold in the second quarter and battled the turnover bug to fall behind 25-16 at the half. They regrouped at halftime and came out charged up to knot the score at 35 at the end of three behind a 19-10 third quarter.

Paden City battled the larger and more experienced Yellow Jackets to the wire in the fourth and were dead even at 50 with 30 seconds left on the clock before a turnover led to a Williamstown bucket. Paden City got called for walking and were forced to foul. The Yellow Jackets sank 1-2 and the Cat’s had a Heasley three rim in and out. After a time out Paden City fouled again and Willianstown made both shots giving them the 55-50 win.

Despite turning the ball over 18 times the game Wildcats used some excellent defense from sophomore Seth Bohrer to keep Willianstown’s big scorer Issac Brown in check and Aaron Heasley found his shooting touch for the Cat’s pouring in 28 big points including four long range three balls while the Wildcats’ defense recorded eight steals. Hayden Hizer added nine points, six assists, three steals and four rebounds plus used his ball handling skills to break the Yellow Jackets press.

The Wildcats were playing short handed with Trey Slider out with an ankle injury and only played five players until Bohrer fouled out with under a minute to play.

The Wildcats had two more field goals than Williamstown but the visitors won the game at the foul line going 13-18 while Paden City hit only 5-11. The smaller Wildcats lost the battle of the boards 29-24 but Heasley took game honors with 11. Matt Saxon played a good floor game and ended with five points including a trey, three assists and two steals while Bohrer and Garrett Cross both recorded four points.

The Wildcats lost the JV game 42-21. Leading the scoring for Paden City were Anthony Newman with sic and Ryan Gross with five.
