Summers Burns Hot For Volleyball Victory

October 12, 2016
Tyler Star News

Tyler Consolidated High School volleyball Coach Richard Summers passed a milestone recently with his 500th career victory.

Alongside his able assistant, his wife Tracy, this dynamic duo has been able to accumulate an impressive record of 502 wins with 222 losses during a career that started 16 years ago. The couple began coaching volleyball because their daughter, Shannon, a 2004 TCHS graduate, became interested in the sport. Their son, Ryan, is a 2008 TCHS graduate.

Their coaching skill and reputation have made the Silver Knights a powerhouse in the sport. Since 2000, TCHS' volleyball team has achieved a state championship, three runners-up, and eight state tournament appearances.

"I want to give my wife all the credit. She understands the game and works very well with kids. Without her, I could never have accomplished this milestone," Summers said after the Silver Knights' two set win over Williamstown - the win that put him over the 500 mark. That's a class act.

In recent days, the volleyball team qualified for both the OVAC Tournament and the LKC Night of Champions.

The Knights, a number 3 seed in Class AAA, will play Fort Frye in the first round of the OVAC Tournament this week. Two winners will advance to the finals on Saturday.

The Silver and Black are a number 1 seed in the LKC Night of Champions.

The repeated success of this small school over larger schools proves the old adage that it's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog.

Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Summers for your tireless dedication to the school and the team.

Go Lady Knights!
