Festivals Showcase Best of Tyler County

September 21, 2016
Tyler Star News

Two festivals show the kindness and hospitality that Tyler County has to offer.

The West Virginia Oil and Gas Festival drew many folks to Sistersville last weekend. The festival and parade offered people an opportunity to see not only how friendly our community can be, but perhaps a small glimpse into the area's rich history. Old photos of Sistersville show a place that had oil derricks in more than a few familiar spots downtown. That's changed, but the people remain the same - a welcoming group that make any feel at home.

The 17th annual Marble Festival that begins Friday and ends Sunday offers another chance for Tyler County to shine. Thousands of people, some from across the country, will attend the festival that showcases not only marbles, but glass making. Once upon a time, the region had many marble and glass manufacturers. Now, only two such factories remain - Marble King in Paden City and Jabo Vitro Marble Factory, located 25 miles south of Sistersville in Lower Newport, Ohio.

The 17th annual Marble Festival is ahead this weekend in Sistersville.

The games played with marbles fostered a timeless set of ideals in generations of children who played with these glass treasures. The Marble Festival offers not only an opportunity to experience a sense of nostalgia in adults, but a chance for a new generation to be captivated by one of life's simpler pleasures. Old and young can see master craftsmen shape glass into creations that inspire the mind and brings smiles.

Both festivals offer a chance to spend time with family for lasting memories.
